When I walk into a fish store I have a hard time walking back out the door empty handed. Is it possible for you to walk out without purchasing something or can you simply windowshop?

I can easily walk out of my LFS if they don't have what I'm looking for or if the fish aren't looking so great. The not so LFS....is a different story - first off they have 650 tanks of fish and secondly, it takes me about an hour and a half to get there. It's MUCH harder to walk out empty handed there.....

it's not just fish I can't resist, it's new decor or plants , or something useful like an algae scrubber, lol, anything fish related really hahaha

I assume you're referring to Tropiquarium? I can't leave that place without something. Lol

Ah. You have to check out tropiquarium in ocean. Tropical Fish Hobbyist did a feature article on the store last month. Amazing store!

One time, I had some extra time at lunch and just looked at the fish... That's the only time I can think of. If I go it's because there is something I want or need to buy. Does ordering something not in stock count

My pockets have to be bere to the bones before I walk out empty handed. Thank goodness I am not buying any more fish. I am looking for another aquarium because my eyes were bigger than my available gallons. If it is not a fish, it is an extra decoration, treats for the fish, a algae scrubber refill, something. You also have to remember that I have 5 dogs (a great dane, pit bull, boxer, Chiquawa (sp) and a mut. I have 6 cats. And, a tortoise. It is really hard not to get in the car and just drive there let alone walk out with nothing.

Sometimes I feel like I'm running a zoo between the fish tanks, dogs, birds, and rodents. Even if it's not a fish related item, I always leave with something.

The only reason I go to the LFS is to buy something. Why would I waste time just looking at stuff?

I love going in to browse and look at all the new fish, or daydream about having this or that.... But I almost always leave with something

I don't really have a problem with it. However, this is largely because I either have my aquariums stocked, or in the case of one of them, know exactly what I want in it and can't afford it right now.
I have too much stuff, so I tend not to buy food or cleaning supplies or that sort of thing unless I go to the store with the intention of buying it.

A good actual fish store? Well, it's pretty out-of-the-way so if I'm there I requested to go because I have something in mind. A chain store? pretty easy to walk out, especially if their fish aren't looking good and I don't need anything.

It is not a problem.
When I was going full tilt, I had more tanks than most stores and healthier and better quality fish.

I'm normally there for something anyway. My problem is more getting only what I went in for. If the wife is along I normally get out OK since I have someone to keep me focused on what we are actually there for

lol well it depends kinda, I do go in sometimes just to check on the stock and how it looks if I'm planning to buy soon. Thou I do tend to be in there semI regularly.

I find if I have plenty to spend I can't always find something, the things I want are usually there when i'm broke

Yes! Either that or I just bought a fish last week and now they have the fish I really wanted but I'm fresh out of tank space.

Not a problem here.I usually plan what I want before I go and if it is not in stock walk around and talk to the owner for a while and leave.

I don't buy every time because my petco always makes me mad. The privately owned fish store here is a different story

My wife and I have walked out many times empty handed. We usually always have specific items in mind to buy when we go. If they don't have it, we walk! We have an underwhelming lfs and multiple petsmarts we frequent. We have gone to multiple stores in one day and bought nothing.

I think I caught something from some of you, I used to be able to walk out very easily a few months ago and now I find myself looking at plants, fish and supplies whenever I go to a store and don't seem to have any self control now lol.

I started out with no self control but am now the opposite. One tank isn't fully stocked yet and probably never will be because I like it being a constant and slowly evolving work in progress. I know what fish I want, in general, and go into fish shops to check what they've got. if they have a good looking fish I've got on my mental list then I'll buy. Otherwise, I'm not in a hurry.

I used to be really bad about it but now that I've been there a thousand times I know the stores stock pretty well so I only buy what I need. Unless he randomly orders a fish on my 'To Buy' list.

Although now that I have a Saltwater tank I get to look at the other half of the tanks and can buy stuff from them(that won't become lunch).

if I walk out empty handed I walk out dissapointed...maybe because they didn't have any thing I really wanted or anything that I would like to spend on.

Helloooooooooo, window shopping anyone?

I don't impulse buy, nor is it safe to do so, so I have no problem whatsoever just browsing and leaving with my wallet intact.

LOL I must have a Jeckyl and Hyde thing going on; I can windowshop, walk around and leave empty-handed, or happen to have a spare $7 in my pocket and run to store to "see if I need something"

So long as it is my LFS of choice, which really is the only one I go to, then the short, simple answer is no, I cannot.

Well, I did it again. Went in for nothing and came out with plants. Now I have to become an expert at plants too.

It would be a much larger problem if That Pet Place (biggest pet store in the USA) was everyone's LFS! I love that store!

Since I work at the main LFS me and my parents buy from I generally don't have too big of an issue walking out empty handed. Mine isn't such a LFS tho it is but it also carries other pet supplies but its smaller than regular chains. I walk out about 2-3 times a month with stuff. Usually dog/cat food. Then my monthly fish purchase (I get a crazy discount once a month). Then outside that its complete impluse shopping. If I see something cool I have to have it. If we just get it in I buy it leave it there and watch it for about a week before bringing it home. My most recent impluse buy was a threadfin butterfly (SW) for my mom's tank and naturally people had to bring in baby fry and they were going to get eaten so I just HAD to take them home so I bought tons of new plants and filter media (since I stole seeded media out of my other tank). My impulse buys generally cost an arm and a leg.

Yes. I go to fish stores when I'm on lunch and stressed. The LFS is my "happy place".

I just returned from a trip to Amarillo Texas where I hit every pet store in town. I picked up some needed supplies like Food, Prime and LeafZone but was able to walk out without purchasing a single thing that I didn’t really need. I did a lot of window shopping and seen some real nice looking fish but because I was there staying for a few days I was able to resist purchasing anything that wasn’t on my shopping list already.

I don’t get to make it to a larger city very often so normally I pick up things that I might need soon or could use and I was tempted a few time to pick up a few extra things but I ended up only getting the items that I really need. I think it shocked my wife.

I don't have to buy something but I usually do. I don't always buy fish. I buy filter media, food, a decoration, and magazines. I also go look at tanks and am like I want that one, and that one... oh and that one and we can't forget that one. Lol, I wish I had room for all the tanks I want lol.
