40 Gallon Tank Is it okay to group different kinds of rainbow fish?

Right now I have 1 australian rainbowfish. If I were to put a different type of rainbowfish in with them (ex.boesemis), would that satisfy their social group needs or do they need other australian rainbowfish to be happy?
Thank you!

yeah, you should be able to do that with no problem just don't do it if you are planning on breeding

I have no experience with rainbow fish and do not know for a fact but I highly doubt it would work. They might group together because there are no others of their kind but it probably wouldn’t be good.

It is best to have three or more males of each kind with a few female rainbows as well. However, if you don’t want more Australian Rainbowfish I don’t think it’s animal cruelty or anything to leave the Australian Rainbowfish as a single specimen and get a school of Bosemanis. I just think it’s probably not ideal to get one each of 10 different kinds of Rainbowfish. You will see the most interesting colors and behaviors if you have at least three males and two or three females of each species.

I have 6 australians in with two turquoise and one bosemani and they do all seem to shoal together! I'd say go for it!

I wouldn't go with Boesemani in a 40 gallon.

M. praecox would be a good choice, or probably most of the blue eyes. There may be others.

It is best to keep a full school of at least 6 schooling fish, They will settle in better, they will be less stressed, they are more likely to thrive. These are expensive fish that I doubt you want to risk. I aggree that if you want to keep the single austrailian, and add a different species, it can work. But Ad 6 of one species, not 6 different species.
