Is it likely my fish died from swallowing a bone?

So this is kind of a weird topic, but I just found my dwarf gourami dead on the bottom of my tank. He did have some sort of small infection on one of his gills the prior week but it seemed to disappear so I ignored it. The last couple of days he was staying near the surface more than normal and today I found him dead on the bottom.

So my question comes from a new food I purchased recently, Omega One Super Color Flakes which I bought because I liked the ingredients. The problem is that there seems to be small bits of bones mixed in with the food. Im wondering if it is possible that my gourami died from swallowing one of these bones or if its more likely it died from some sort of infection. The only sign I have to go on is that he seems bloated which is what made me think its something he ate.

I would contact the seller if there are little bones in your fish flakes that’s not right so that could have been a cause if his death

I read some other reviews of the food having bones, and I was aware of them which is why I was only picking out flakes one by one (they are pretty big flakes) I guess I wasn't careful enough. I just spent a few minutes looking through the food and this is what I found. So heads up to anyone using Omega One Super Color Flakes.

is there supposed to be bones in the flake?what ever that is does not look like any flake I've tried before. Sorry about your fish. I would definitely contact the manufacturer and look online to see if others have experienced this before.

No the bones arent supposed to be there, I think its because Salmon and Whole Herring are the first 2 ingredients (ironically this is why I bought it). I checked amazon and others experienced the same problem, some also lost fish because of this. I contacted the manufacturer but I doubt much will happened besides an apology.

I am sorry for your loss, it’s never easy losing fish. Eating bones is what fish do.
Just like birds and many living creatures in this world the acids in the stomach dissolve bones.
A fish species that could not eat bones would have died out years ago.

A link to a live camera on some week old chicks on a nest. Live feeding daily as mum feeds them their weight in pigeons .

really sorry that must be frustrating. I personally always avoided omega one. If your looking for a quality flake try new life spectrum optimum.

You are right that many animals do eat bones, but wouldnt you agree that its possible for a bone piece to get lodged in a fish somehow? I know people that give their dogs chicken bones and such, but not if they are cooked because cooked bones are much more brittle and likely to splinter. These bones are cooked into the fish food.

That’s a very good point. The process of making the flake has indeed changed the bones into something different again. Yes they would be more brittle.

Also the size issue. Normally the size of the mouth limits the size of the fish sallowed which in turn limits the size of the bones.

I buy a lot of that exact food and I've never seen a bone piece that big in it. I'm thinking your batch probably didn't get ground up enough. I'd chuck it and buy a new jar.

Ive never seen food that looked like that. Im not convinced it bones, but regardless.....

Fish eat bones. Its normal. You dont think they pick out the bones when they eat other fish, right?

Gouramis are very susceptible to bloating/dying over night. I just bought a new Neon Blue the other day, she looked great the first night I had her, next morning she was HUGE and not swimming right. By that evening she was dead on the bottom. This is the first fish Ive had die right off like that in 20+ years.
