Let me know because I curently don't have one on my ten gallon and they seem fine.

It really depends on the stability of the temp in the house. If it's a stable 78, you should be fine because the water should stay right around there as well. If you tend to drop the temp, say, at night for sleeping down to something like 72, you may want to pick one up. I have one tank running without a heater right now, but once the weather cools off and I can open the windows, I'll be getting one for the tank since I know it will get chilly in the evenings.

Most heaters shut off at 78°F, or the set temperature. A heater is necessary to keep the temperature constant, and avoid from dipping too much

I don't have a heater on my tanks in the summer either, as my temp stays around 78 - 80 F. I turn the heaters back on when the temps drop in the fall.
