My wife is in the christmas mood and wants to diffuse some essential oils. Could this be harmful to the fish?

No, most definitely not, unless it went directly into the aquarium, and I still wouldn't be concerned.
I have those running year round in my home, and there has been no effect in any of my fish.
Awesome Thanks!

I stay away from clove, only because I know what that can do, but if you are not spilling the diffuser water into the tank, it's completely fine.
The diffused steam is not going to travel far enough to get into the aquarium.

Its sitting right next to the tank so that why I was concerned. Out of curiosity what is wrong with clove?

Clove is used to euthanize fish, and even though it may or may not have ill effects, it worries me so I don't use it.
Do you think it's an option to move it somewhere a bit further away?

We are diffusing a mixture of the following oils:
Lemon
grapefruit
peppermint
wintergreen
basil
rosemary

Yeah I'll move it away if thats best. The tank is in the center of the room so thats why we have it there.

If your tanks have a tight fitting lid, there shouldn't be a problem.
I keep my diffuser on the kitchen counter, with one of my tanks being across the room.

Thanks again. I'll move it to a safer counter space.

Idk about oils, but we burn scented candles year round with no ill effects.

2 of my 3 tanks are open top.

I actually just moved my oil diffuser! Mine was right above an open top tank, though. I still use it in the same room but not where the diffuser is going right into the tank.

Man all your houses must smell good! Mine smells like fish. Good question though. Reminds me to look around the tanks and make sure nothing tox is close by as I’m constantly knocking stuff over.

Think about anything you wouldn't want diffused direcitly into your eye, or an open wound. Don't diffuse that stuff near your tank. Across the room should be fine.
