It really depends on where the beach is, since "beach sand" can be sand from anywhere in the world and any beach, and all of them are different in some way.

Stereotypical US vacation spot beach sand does feel like play sand. Lol

Both black diamond and pool filter sand are coarser grains than play sand.

It can be, but BDBS comes in about four different grits IIRC. Unfortunately what I have available locally always seems to be the fine stuff.

To the original question most beach sand I have seen in the US is too fine for my liking.

Compared to play sand, is pool filter sand tons more manageable like it doesn't float in the filter or so? Or does play sand do that?

Play sand is better for loaches, including kuhlI loaches, right?

I don't really know about pool filter sand, but the play sand that I use just sinks directly to the bottom. It really depends on where the source of the sand is.

Rinse any substrate before use. I learned that the hard way. That will get rid of the floating debris.

Play sand stays down IF it is washed well. Otherwise it's a muddy mess.

It's a lot smaller grained than most sand so I'd think it would be nicer to rub your face against, but either would work.

It depends on where the sand is sourced. The play sand in my area doesn't really need any washing, if at all, and sinks easily.

Lucky! Mine was so muddy before it was washed.

Love it now, but 100 pounds of play sand is a pain in the butt to wash.

I have both sand and pool filter sand in my tanks. Pool filter is a lot easier to get ahold of and to clean, plus I've noticed it dosen't pack like my other sand does. That being said, the sand is denser so it's a little bit easier to clean then PFS. If it was a flat out comparison between the two, I'd get more sand but everything else considered, (time/price/availability) I'd do more PFS. I don't know anything about BDBS
