For people like me, where do you experts (and amatuers,) get your info? Is it experience, reading, both, or something else? I want to become someone who can be knowledgeable, like Culprit , DoubleDutch , Gourami36 ,and bizaliz3 .

I read a lot on seriously fish and practical fishkeeping magazine, but experience seems to be the best way to gain knowledge... just can't learn from mistakes through reading, and learning from mistakes is the most effective way of learning I've found! Although I'm relatively new to the hobby, I had been reading about so many fish types for months if not a year before I ever got a tank, and I still just simply couldn't give good advice or knowledge without experiencing certain thinks myself! (I'm a leader on fishkeepers amino now, so I give a lot of advice.. glad I wasn't promoted before I got fish, definitley couldn't answer half the questions people ask before LOL)

Nice. You must post lots for a 17 year old.

But I’m the only amateur you mentioned

Yeah, I see. You just seem to hop in and correct my posts, and I research the information, and It is right. I thought it might be nice to include you.

Well, signing up two years ago, and being that I am always near my computer on a daily basis may have something to do with it.

Most of what I've learned over the last 5 or 6 years has been right here on fishlore!!

I also joined the local Minnesota aquarium society in order to get in touch with local fish enthusiasts who have also been great resources.

Lastly...lots of googling. But when you Google stuff...you'll want to read multiple results and also run it by folks here to confirm accuracy.

Oh and lastly lastly.....trial and error unfortunately!!

I'm technically a student, but not a teen. Most of my info comes from online. When I find a new fish topic to learn about, I just read source after source after source until I'm not finding any new info. That, or until I just can't care anymore lol. The more you research, the easier it is to decipher the from the fact too. There's tons of bad info out there.

agreed! If you just go by the first stuff that pops up, you could end up with one of those horrible articles titled "FISH THAT COULD LIVE IN BOWLS" and has goldfish listed as #1

I just turned 26, but with the mind of an 18 year old still, it feels like. LOL! I Don't want to grow up T.T...... My knowledge is pretty good, but I still am learning and seek advice from other Fishlorian's or read online other websites for answers. Bubbles_and_Fins I must say, for such a young mind, bubbles has helped me a lot with my crowntail betta and has given a lot of incredible input to many Fishlorian's. Of only 6 months so far of her serious knowledge she gained from the fish hobby, she does know a lot. As you can see by her post she does a lot in the meantime and still have dedication to fish care. Either way though, you can ask anyone in the forum anything you want pertaining to your fish. We are here to give advice, and not judge! If you make a mistake, do not hesitate to ask for help.

Having the mind of an 18 year old counts!

I'm trying to build up my own arsenal of knowledge

Haha TOTALLY KIDDING

I am sure you will get tons of responses to this thread when school gets out for the day!! lol

Wait a second, why are you in school right now young man!?

HAHA totally kidding again.
That's how my daughter gets caught out! I had to go in the other day to collect her phone from the school office - she said the boys next to her shouted really loudly for her to put her phone away and the teacher heard and confiscated it <<< Born yesterday not!

Actually, you need to be 13 to join any online forum/Facebook etc that is hosted in the US. Not sure about European laws, but I believe it's similar.

This is a US Federal law, and is not negotiable. It's called COPPA, and it's a Federal offence for Fishlore to be knowingly storing information about children.

For people like me, where do you experts (and amatuers,) get your info? Is it experience, reading, both, or something else?
I wouldn't consider myself an expert.
My knowledge generally comes from a combination of experience and research/reading.
By researching, it gives me an idea of what to expect, but it's only through experience that I find out if it actually works. Not just fish-keeping, but in all aspects of life.
I also find now, that I need to do less research about somethings, not because I'm a "know it all", but because I can relate past experiences and my knowledge to determine a likely outcome. I might do some quick checking to confirm my thoughts, and that I haven't missed something, but generally, I can go with my gut.

Where do I get information? Primarily the internet now. I think the 'trick' is that with experience and knowledge, you learn better questions to search, and with your knowledge and understanding, you can deduce the answer without specifically having to ask.

I’m 16, and a junior in high school.

It could have been your lunch break too. I was just teasing

How could I forget about lunch! More time to be on fishlore! As if the time I spend on here isn’t already too much.

I put some random age in to because I thought the same thing, now I see that you do not have to be a certain age I wish I put my actual age in.

I'm not mentioned and maybe not so knowledgeable, but I get my info from scholarly studies mostly. I have links bookmarked that I get from other knowledgeable hobbyists too. A lot of good info here at FL
