Is a 36 gallon bowfront too small for rainbows?

My fishless cycle is hopefully coming to an end this week or next and I was wondering if I could stock about 6 or so rainbows. It's a 36 gallon bowfront. Anybody else have this setup?

Thanks!

Welcome to fishlore!
It depends on what type of rainbow, what do you have in mind? Dwarf rainbows and Neon blue rainbows are types that would fit.

I wouldn't do a shoal of turquoise or Goyder river, but it would be fine for most rainbows in the 4" or less range. Which ones in particular are you interested in?

Well, I was initially wanting the Murray River or Turquoise ones, but not sure they'd be happy in my tank. Someone suggested Threadfin, but I'm wanting to also get a school of diamond tetras and/or emperor tetras, and heard they might fin nip the threadfins?

They might........ I wouldn't get threadfins, they are best on their own. Dwarf rainbowfish would also do well.

Depending on what rainbows you are thinking of. You could easily have a school of 6-10 celebes with bottom feeders and maybe something else with no problems. But if you want boesmis you couldnt have a large enough school to keep them happy. I really like australians they are colorful, large, and produce little waste so you could easily have about 6 in there. Hope this helps!

I went with the dwarf neons and so far are loving them. Even the females are showing really nice color right now, despite the fact the tank came down with columnaris. They are 99.9% cured and I'm hoping I can finally get some pics up soon. Last dose of kanaplex is tonight.

One day after the house is finished and I have room, I'm going to have a rainbow tank. I envision a nice 75 gallon or bigger in my living room. Of all the fish I have, the rainbows and the cory cats are my favorites. Rainbows come up to me when I go over to the tank to beg for food, it's so cute.

I have a 36 gallon bowfront and am currently housing 4 dwarf neon rainbows and one boesmani. They are doing great and I have not had any problems

Not the best pic in the world, but that's my tank! I need to do some aquascaping, but it'll be a while.
