I'm thinking about upgrading my tank since I have two mollies in my ten gallon tank. Is 20 enough or do they need 29 gallons?

29 would be much better.

I hear 29 is the minimum for most Molly species. A 29 has the same footprint as a 20-long anyway, so might as well go with the larger option, right?
Gives you more room to play with, and a stabler, healthier tank in the end.

Vote for 29 gallon! If you can get a 20 long you can get a 29 since as mention they have the same footprint. Not sure if you know but there is a $1 per gallon sale going on right now at Petco till November 5!

Hello Sco...

If you have a couple of males and plant the surface well, then a 20 could work with large, regular water changes. Add females and you'll have quite a few in a matter of weeks, so you'll need at least a tank twice as large. Live bearing fish, especially larger ones like Mollies and Platys require larger tanks, they're very active swimmers and need the room. I keep a lot of different kinds of Platys and have them in a minimum 45 gallons of water. Most are in 55 and 60 gallon tanks.

Large, weekly water changes of at least half the volume of the tank are the only way to keep these fish. Add a bit of standard aquarium salt and a good diet and they'll grow big and healthy.
