Iron stands vs wooden stands..

Hi all. I was wondering what aquarium stand most people feel is better? When i got my aquarium years ago it came with the iron or cast iron (still not sure) stand. I originally wanted a wooden stand but at the time it was a bit out of my price range. The stand is over 27 years old and is fine no warps, bends etc. I was told over time that wooden stands can warp over time and spills from water may weaken it, but not sure if that's true, my next tank if i can hopefully get i would like a wooden stand but does iron last longer and sturdier than wood and better in the long run i was wondering?

If it is actual wood, and treated, can last quite a long time. But so can the metal. I have used both, but most of my stands last only until my plans change! So can't say for sure on longevity for either.

Don't really care for the looks of most iron stands, wooden stands usually hide all the accessories. No doubt in my mind iron stands should last forever though.

For stands that are made of particle board, or a similar product, that is certainly true. For real solid wood stands it's much less likely.

I like wood stands to hide the filter and a water reservoir for a terrarium.

i would think the iron would last longer also, i was wondering about how different kinds of wood would hold up also I would agree also as far as hiding the filter, pumps etc.. with the iron you can't really do that with the wood you can. A while back i brought a tank skirt for the bottom of the iron stand it looked like my aquarium was wearing a dress lol, didn't fit the look at all now i just leave it as is.

One nice thing about a wood stand is that it's easier to reinforce/mod. Iron's hard to do anything with. Source: person with a metal stand who would like to reinforce it with basic household tools, haha.

Those welded steel stands last forever - I have some that must be 30 years old or more and so long as you don’t let them rust - they don’t wear out.

It is a bit tough to build a cabinet around one of them, though not impossible. It’s easier to attach a curtain or skirt to the top steel frame and for that you can use stick on velcro, among other things.

I thought about trying to build a cabinet around the stand by taking some wood and spray painting the wood black to match the stand, but unless you have a way to make a swinging door to open it would just be a pain to go underneath the tank if you have to.so I'll probably just leave it or someday maybe I'll just get a piece of wood that just goes to the middle

All our stands are. homemade. Three are made or iron, but they are completely covered with wood cabinets so no iron is visible. The biggest tank has a very strong wood frame, I think if well made, and suited to the size of the tank either is fine.

Thats great, as far as i know they don't sell iron with wood around it so DIY is the way to go if you have the know-how, hopefully someday I'd like to try that.
