Hi

I was wondering what was the difference between these two type of lighting...

1. Which one saves more energy?
2. Which one will last longer?
3. Which one will be good for plants.. (current plant type: Java Fern)

I have a link to the two type of lighting I am thinking of getting.

Thanks

The answer to all 3 questions is the compact fluorescent. The one you linked will work for java fern, but since it is a 50/50 bulb half the bulb is actinic (blue). If you like the blue look, go for it. Otherwise, you can pick up 10K bulbs at Walmart. This is what I use:

thanks for the quick reply harpua

may I ask how much it cost for that lighting at walmart?

I do like the blue, since my other two tanks are white lights...

Well, I'm not sure how much those bulbs would cost for you since you are in Canada. In the states, they are about $6 a bulb I think.

The downside to the 50/50 bulb for a planted tank is that plants don't use the actinic light. Your java fern will be fine, but the white bulbs could open up some other options for you.

interesting.. what type of options?

I'm not very good with plants, and I have the java fern in a jar right now... somehow those compact lighting burns dark spots on the plant or is something else doing that?

maybe I'll put in some java moss too?
