As you get older, your opinions turn into facts, whether they are right, wrong or otherwise. It's just a sign of getting older. Trust me, one day you will do the same thing.

When you skip a generation, the gap between opinions is even further and harder to bridge.

Here on the forum, very few of us would have known that you were a minor based on your posts here. You don't argue your points and you don't knock others for their points.

It's not easy to hear someone knock everything you do or believe, but at the end of the day, you are the only one that has to live your life.

In a few days you'll be back home and living the way you want live, and trust me, you'll meet many more people who are judgmental in this life, so think about this trip as practice for later in life.

Thanks to you, I've come to that conclusion! I'll deal and be positive. If the time comes, I will stand up for myself. Otherwise, (Come to mama 120 gallon!) I'll just put up with them. (to the best of my abilities!)
But I'll be nice and just respect their culture, despite the fact I don't practice it.
I'm oh so respectful to them, but I swear every time I go there, it is something totally new that I'd never think a respectable person would say.
You'd never guess what they told their friend while I was sitting at the table. Oh well! Humiliating, but I don't live near them at least!

And thanks!
Whenever I get a pet, I want to give them the best life possible. I'm so lucky have found fish lore, and I love how nice we are on here.
Due to all the advice I've received on here, I feel happy to pass the favor along and share my knowledge.

See you when you get back GuineaPigster!

Hate to say it but sometimes we must play the role of the dutiful grand daughter but deep inside know who you are and be proud of it.

I'd say have a good time but, well, maybe you'll get some time for your self.

You know, Piggie, now that I've slept on it, I thought of something. Maybe, just maybe, you're so used to being treated a certain way by your grandparents that now you expect to be victimized while you're with them. It puts you into a certain mindset, which means that even if they say or do something that's not really that insulting or negative, your head is already keyed to translate it as such, and so that ends up being the end result.

Try this. Pretend you've never met these people before. Start with a new slate. It'll give you a zen place to start this weekend and who knows, you might just enjoy yourself.

Good morning,

starhanging.gifReligion and Sexual Orientation topics are not discussed on Fish Lore. Posts on these subjects within this thread have been deleted.

Thanks!

Pigster, have a safe trip and we will look forward to your safe return. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Make the best of a bad situation. You can do it.

That's a shame. I thought our discussion was very respectful and courteous. Oh well.

It was, but they are very controversial topics, and I think that rule is in place to avoid hurt feelings. (Like if someone said ''I hate your religion'' or something) I think it was a good discussion, but it could have spiraled into the land of utter chaos. Sorry Ken!!

ummm yeah my 3 year old named him.......I wasn't allowed and he looked at me rather strange on my opinions bless him! lol

Yeah they are awesome, wasn't keen on them to be honest but this one came with the tank, and now I have a big soft spot for him, such a cute one, tends to playfully follow the angels then just stops and stare at them and zoom off all shy.

Hi, Cavy Poster: I find in my life that if I don't respect someone, the feeling is likely mutual. So I was stuck by the first post you made, saying that you'd return feeling horribly. Well, don't do that; no reason to give anyone the power to make you feel that way. You need not be rude or anything to maintain your dignity-quite the opposite, I find. Often the best way to deal with dissrepect is to return rudeness with politeness; hard to do, but worth trying, IMO.
I mean it's only family, not something important, like pets or something. Best to you, rick

Thanks Rick.
It is rather hard not to feel bad....but I guess I'll try to brush it aside as their ''old ways'' (and go think about 120 gallons!). I'll also try to go with an open mind, like Lynda said.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

Words to take with you. Write them on the inside of your arm or something. When it all gets bad, go in the bathroom and read them to yourself. Then smile, cause we love you.

(seriously though. Why don't they like your hair? Is it blue? Mohawk? ..... are you bald? -_- )

Good idea Kevy!!
And no, it's not blue, mohawk, or bald.
It is just cut really short, and girls in their culture are supposed to be this of beauty: long, flowing hair!
Oops. Sorry Ken.
Me too!

I would say borrow my hair buuut... not possible.. lol I think short hair can look fantastic on some girls. And besides, it takes a lot of work for long flowy hair and not everyone wants that haha brush it off like water off a ducks back and you'll make it through the weekend

ahhh I did that my freshman year of college. My mom still hasn't really forgiven me. And I have to pass haircut plans with her before I go. No more spontaneous chopping. I'm 25, and its still frowned upon. (I wish I could though, I would love to go pixie short again, it was so easy to deal with.)

Maybe I had it easy.. my mom didn't stop me from dying my hair blue, pink, red, green, and purple... she did it with me! I've always been allowed to cut it or dye it or style it however I wanted.

I just wanted it easy to care for....I have so many important things to do in life, and hair just slowed me down.
Funny conversation with a 5 year old the other day; I'm wearing a hat:
Are you a girl?
Yes, I am a girl, I just have short hair, see? (I take my hat off)
Oh. Would you put your hat back on?

Well depending on how many generations have been here it can be easy or difficult, for example my maternal side came from Europe in the early 1900, so unless I buy international access I can't follow that trail.

From my fathers side, I'm a direct descendant of Jonathan Phinney, married to Mary Rodgers from the Mayflower in the early 1700's with all sorts of people in between.

All in all there are a few hurdles, so if you hit a dead end like I did in 1857 on my fathers side, be prepared to make a few extra phone calls to keep the trail going.

It was a lot of fun, plus it helped me find my dad's brother (my uncle) who I lost contact when I was 8 years old.
