Ignore someone ?

coralbandit

Well I am on my fourth forum in seven years and before I go maybe if I just don't have to constantly have someone tag me or read their incorrect info on so many threads I would like to give ignoring them a try . I have never been banned from one as I knew it was time to go everytime..I would prefer to leave on my terms when I want but I fear my options are disappearing quickly . Maybe it is my time and I have just failed to see it coming ?
Lord knows I have been trying to ignore him for what seem likes months even though he has only been here 2&1/2 months ! Maybe it is his 3,000+ post ? Yea over 3,000 post in 2 1/2 moths .But since they keep tagging me and the staff here seem to feel his derailing ,wandering and incorrect information that is offered on daily basis needs no attention I thought I would try ignoring my very first member of a forum I like participating on in 7 years .. He should feel honored since he has managed to push my buttons like no other ever has !

I am a mature adult 55 years old but have found their totally incorrect and selfish post basically infuriate me to point of losing it .He has no care or concern for the bad info he offers daily , I want to ignore him ..I NEED TO IGNORE HIM. I also wish he knew this so he would stop calling me to 'clean up ' his mess since no one else will or cares that he offers incorrect info daily or derails threads constantly ..This may all seem trivial but I take fish and their care pretty serious.
I was a mod on a site for 2 years and was always able to help others myself or find someone with the right answer for them .
So I am asking for help in a last ditch effort to be able to continue being on this forum ..I will either leave this forum completely or be banned because of this person and the staffs lack of care for him
not following rules or care about accurate info .

Someone PLEASE tell me how to ignore someone ! My account just says I ignore no one but does not tell me how to ..I may not make it through tonight .
since the first thing I see when logging on is this member offering incorrect info on something they know nothing about and then tagging me like I want to help them ..I don't want to help them do anything but leave me alone .Sorry this is a very selfish post as it is all about me but if I don't take drastic measures I am sure to be banned or will feel forced to leave ...
I guess if I don't get a response I could just go through my Zeno Moderator manual from my last forum as this is a Zeno forum also but I know others here do like to help and are sick of this person also so thought maybe since complaints go unresolved I would try to lead by example ..This member infuriated me so much last night with some of the most incorrect info being offered to someone who really needs help that my post was deleted by the staff as it may have been rude ? I guess only some can bend rules here so I need to know my place ..If this member keeps tagging me and I can not ignore them I guess it is just my time to exit this forum but that is not really my first choice of action .

Mike

HI coralbandit - just click the person's name on a post and a member card displays. Then click the ignore button on the member card. Then click the ignore button again to verify.

The great thing about forums is the peer review in a thread. If someone is giving bad advice or incorrect info we can correct them. If you think someone is giving incorrect information on purpose, you can report their post and a moderator will take care of it.

Done. I am sure I know the answe but is there any way this person can be informedso they know ..

I don't think the member is notified if they are put on ignore by someone.

TWiG87

Just going to put it out there...
Don’t go!

coralbandit

Can I tell them or will that be 'rude' ? The boy seems slow on the uptake and I thought being honest would be a neat approach.
Doesn't seem with all the complaints you guys have said one word to him ..

mattgirl

I truly do understand where you are coming from. Every now and then someone comes along that posts on just about every thread whether they know anything about the subject or not. Thankfully they often don't stay long. Either life gets in the way or they finally get bored and just disappear.

It has happened to me from time to time. I try to just bite my tongue although by doing so a lot of bad information is put out there and sadly someone new to the hobby doesn't know that it is bad information 'specially when they see the number of post that person has posted. Instead of trying to correct the bad info I just follow up with my answer even if it is totally different. All I can do is hope the OP will read both responses and make up their mind as to what to do. Sadly it does make it even more confusing for someone new to the hobby. They don't know who to trust or believe.

Over the years I have put some on my ignore list and before long I see that they have moved on. Please don't let them cause you to leave this place. If there is no one here to correct the blatant misinformation lots of folks will never know what they are being told isn't the best way to go.

Right now there are actually at least 2 that I feel sure will get bored before long and will move on. Maybe they get tired of being corrected but it does get tiresome having to do it so often We all know there is more than one way to do things but some of the suggestions are really out there.

Hopefully ignoring the thorn in your side will give you some peace and you can just concentrate on helping all the folks that treasure your input. When someone is on your ignore list you won't see any of their posts. Kinda strange reading along and seeing the gap but is worth it for peace of mind.

By all means, tell him if it will make you feel better. I really don't see it as being rude. I see it as being honest.

JettsPapa

Can I tell them or will that be 'rude' ? ....

My knee jerk reaction is to tell him, but then I realized that would be hypocritical since I left a forum for pretty much the same reason, and I just left without saying anything. However, my value on that forum was far less than yours is here. This will be a much poorer place if you leave, and I sincerely hope you don't.

Leeman75

This is honesty the first forum that I've ever been on...ever! I can imagine that that can get frustrating. Coralbandit, I appreciate your info and information that you've shared with on some of my posts and others, so I don't want to see you go!

As for anyone on this post, if I ever do anything like that, please call me out on it because I can assure you that I have NO idea that I'm doing it!!

Tez

Doesn't seem with all the complaints you guys have said one word to him
Coralbandit it would be a total shame to lose such a good member because while i've been on here you've given excellent advice to new and old members.
I know the person your on about and seen the comments, the reason why I don't mention nothing is because it turns to bad dispute on someones discussion and half the time the person who is in the wrong gets away scott free and the person in the right..either is picked up or banned.

Just press the ignore button and take no notice, as there will come a time when he'll mess up big time.

Addictedtobettas

I would say tell them, because if it were me or ever becomes me I’d like to know if I’m messing up and potentially causing fish and/or fish keepers stress, harm or possible tank deaths.
I try, but don’t always succeed, to state that something is just in my limited experience or knowledge and how I got it. Perhaps we all need to be reminded that what we know isn’t always everything there is to know and sharing it as gospel is dangerous.

Rcslade124

Yes coralbandit your knowledge would be a shame to lose. Everyone looks for you with ram questions. And also many other places you have a wealth of knowledge

SnookusFish

Tbh I think the person knows who they are already whether you want to call them out or not and I'm sure most people in the forum know too, unless its me(I hope not)!
Personally I really want you to stay because of your expertise and id be really sad if you left tbh, youve helped me before on my first thread and I know you will help many others in the future who need your help. I'm new to the forum and probably shouldnt be commenting here but please stay

StarGirl

Maybe they should just go by years on the forum badges or something like that. Get rid of the post numbers. That's what he wants above all else. It wouldn't be like a game to him. Then they would get bored faster.

UnknownUser

I've been trying to answer the most *basic* threads such as cycling questions that I hope I know a little of and typically I try to say *disclaimer* hope someone better comes along and answers... but if I'm ever wrong please please let me know! And please tell others when they are wrong too! Even if the specific person keeps posting wrong information, it's the OP that suffers from that misinformation and all you really awesome people gotta correct it or cost them their fish, and that could make them leave the hobby! I know my first few posts I could definitely tell who was experienced and who was new; hopefully others recognize it as well when all of you come on and correct misinformation.

david1978

You can't go. Who would I tag for answers? mattgirl can't go either.

What would be nice if the mods polled some of the more knowledgeable members and voted on a title that's separate from thread count. The ones who have been here for awhile know who knows what about some parts of the hobby and they know they can trust their answers or opinions.

zorianak

I saw this thread pop up in "new threads" and just wanted to say that Coralbandit's been incredibly helpful to me over the last couple of days as I dive into rams after years of wanting to have 'em and has very much gone out of his way to make sure that I'm informed and making the right choices.

It would definitely be a shame to lose someone that cares this much for the hobby; I saw it happen with guppies over the last decade, when a certain other forum hit a huge point of misinformation and just in general poor experiences. I left the hobby around then from some perosnal life stuff, but not before some of the people that had more-or-less mentored much of the community left over similarly bad information.

I don't know the full backstory here, but just wanted to chip in my $.02 - especially as I work in an area that also has tons of misinformation and I've been a community admin before (non-fish related) and have had to clamp down on bad information. It's not easy from any side.

While I understand the sentiment behind this idea, iirc back when I was pretty fresh to this forum, exactly this discussion was going on, basically giving privilege status and/or right to reply to a very select few members.
I think this would strongly stifle an open and honest discussion. There are plenty of topics that even the experienced members here heartily disagree on as evidence by some of the longer discussions with posts running like walls of text. By giving one member seniority on any given topic, you are really inviting the idea that their opinion in general is superior to that of others, regardless of the content of what will then be said. I just have something against the very idea of that.
I also think it may kill inflow of new members of the forum, as on some other forums that I've tried/visited where basically three members with 10K+ posts answer all new threads and every thread dies after a few replies. Mostly because those members' words are considered the end-all, what could you possibly have to add (or heaven forbid, disagree with)?

Not that it would happen immediately but I think the openness, frankness, and space for debate and a plurarity of views is one of the things that make this forum in particular so great and that keeps new members coming in, some of whom choose to stick around. It makes for an attractive, welcoming atmosphere.

Even though that has its downsides at times, as all things do.

Also guys, the message has been delivered now. I don't think it is helpful to pile on a public shaming beyond the first few to prove that it is a community issue.

I love seeing posts with comments from you and some others. I just recently joined the forum, but prior to that I saw your input on quite a few of the things that I was having problems with, myself. I think new people will see through the misguided information, especially when they see how many people say the same thing. I just want to personally thank you for helping keep me informed as I still continue to learn and progress in the hobby.

The titles we have now do that to A point. I know of times that my experience with something was different then then it was of members that I do trust. Most of the members here only want someone to succeed and would never steer anyone wrong. But then their are members that well you get the idea. Something like mentor status. Even being a mod on here doesn't save you from discussions.

Hang in there (and here on FL) coralbandit. Don’t let one bad egg outweigh all the good you do.

Here’s one small example. . . Another spawn tonight from a pair of coralbandit GBRs!

Ah brightened up my day! First thing I did was quickly check my message count before realising I don't think I've ever tagged coralbandit
Experience counts for a lot and you have it in abundance. A few too many recently wading in with 'scientific' proof who sweep others' experiences aside like rubbish.
Some forums are just too technical too - fair enough if you like that but mostly it's chilled here and experience based.
I've changed my mind on a few things based on replies to some of my comments and the things I've read and thus changed my advice and you've deffo helped.
Maybe just have a break? (a short one mind )

A201

Every fish forum I've followed has a select few that outshine the rest. Some forums have special designations or titles for those members, which signify achievement & knowledge. One of the more popular forums promotes members to upper tier titles based on Moderator's opinions & member votes. Probably a better method than promoting simply by a huge posting count.
IMO, CB would be a Fish Lore "Gold Tier" member, if that classification existed. I can think of a few others that would also qualify for the FL all star team as well.
Hopefully the over zealous member will calm down a bit. There is a place & topic for everyone to participate, but its a good idea to avoid commenting on topics one knows little or nothing about.
Things will level out CB.

Just a relative "Newbie" to forums compared to a lot. I left another forum due to overbearing and condescending posts from a member. The member I wanted to ignore was a "Mod" so no option but to leave. I do miss quite a few of the other members.
I have used the ignore here a few times, believe me it has helped. Too bad I can not use it on the job.

As has been mentioned, it would be a shame if you left. You have helped me and a large number of members. The information you have shared of actual experiences, your patience and willingness to help have earned you the title of "Ram Guru" in my humble opinion.
Please stick it out, as the saying goes “One bad apple spoil the bunch."
The bunch wants you to stay.

Wow I’m just shocked!! Why would someone bother you? I just don’t get it. When I first got here I used to answer a lot of questions. A lot I said was frowned upon because I’m old school. Must say I’ve leaned a lot here! There are some great people here trying different things. Just a great source of info. Coral you’ve been as helpful as any I’ve met. Never read something I didn’t agree with from you.

Some people this is a game. When I first got here I was attached by a 30k member on a regular basis. Anything I said was shot down. Than I read the profile and realized they achieved that number in under 3yrs. I realized what was up and paid no more attention to them.

Don’t leave! This place would be so much less without you!

Oh... I hope it's not me lol... I am new to this forum.. And not posted much.. But I've seen it in the past where people just take over posts.. They are called trolls I believe.. Usually post all the wrong info, post stuff that's never really rude but can be quite upsetting... Am glad I've come across this post and learnt how to do the ignir thing here, just incase I need it lol... I have a few picks of my Goldies if your interested and I'm getting a new 180L tank tonight, really looking firward to planting that up and tranfuring my goldies..

Aw, just saw this thread, don't go, you have been really helpful

Hope it all gets better

I think we are guilty of derailing threads at some point. Lol. I try to at least wait till the op's question has been after. And besides we have enough fun threads going that they seem to get derailed less lately. I wonder if they would let a few of the legends vote a member off the forum?

MissNoodle

I respect your knowledge and experience. You are intelligent and have a lot of passion for the hobby.

But I want to play devil's advocate here, at the risk of my own standing on the forum here.

Lots of you are jumping on a person you don't know the identity of for certain. Is that really fair? Especially when you only have one side of the story.

Coralbandit is totally entitled to his feelings and right to ignore someone who rubs him the wrong way. If someone is bothering you and aren't technically breaking rules, then it's the best thing to do. And he was simply asking how to ignore someone, not for people to berate an unknown person without considering their feelings too.

Ever think the person is only over-enthusiastic because theyre excited to find a group of people who share the same hobby? This hobby isn't for elitists--its for everyone. Patience is hard for some, and that's okay, but everyone jumping on the bandwagon ripping apart someone is not okay.

We should encourage joy in the hobby, while guiding people in the right direction rather than making them feel terrible for simply wanting to enjoy the company of like minded people.

A forum isn't just a place to get information and help. It's also a community to share a love of something in common.

That's all I want to say. I'm happy Coralbandit isn't leaving. You're a veteran in the hobby and your passion can help teach many your ways of working with fish. But I think everyone needs to cool it a bit and consider others feelings too.

KribensisLover1

Just FYI I derail threads a lot for which I’m sorry. But I’ve seen several people on this thread Think it’s rhem. And now I think it’s me who derails. So just pm that person perhaps and tell them bc this passive aggressive hinting isn’t cool. Thank you MissNoodle I love what you said.

And as for the rest
I’ll remember not to get excited and ask things in the future. My bad. Get
Bored and go away? Thanks for the message to newbies. I am just as upset as you are now.

VOTE A MEMBER OFF THE FORUM? This is appalling. APPALLING. how do you think those senior members learned? You think they weren’t new one day? Props to those that help so much. But VOTE A MEMBER OFF. THAT IS SO BEYOND THE SCOPE OF REASON. I guess I’ll be voted off the island for this. If that’s the attitude no need to push people out they’ll leave themselves.

Right but it was mentioning somebody passive aggressively. And yes the op can post what they want. But the lord of the flies gang mentality and comments about hoping people move on? ESP right now. We are all stuck inside the house. We should imho be banding together not tearing people apart. I see that wrong info is not good. But let’s see if we can pm that person and say pls stop tagging me. Look I don’t know anything hence why I’m on here. I don’t know the proper protocol. But I do know many people felt the need to reiterate and expand on the topic rather than saying this is how to ignore. Let’s come together guys. I don’t have answers. To anything. But we are facing and staring death in the face outside our doors. Pls don’t forget that and pls let’s show some love. That includes me who is now on a rampage. So I’m sorry. Time for me to practice what I preach.[/QUOTE]O

Post count= message count = thread count. What ever you want to call it. Then the ones on the fun or game threads don't count.

Ok relax it was a joke. We already have lots of rules that can get you kicked off. We don't need more ways.
On this thought I wonder if anyone is ignoring me. It shows my followers which is sort of creepy but not who ignores me.

coralbandit

This will be my last post for a while at least .
The boy is symptom .
The thoughtless greed and lack of care by the staff here is the problem. If I got paid for every post he made I would not slow him down either maybe ? Well I would but I can easily see how others have fallen .
It's about integrity to me and some have it and apparently some do not as I see it ..It is never too late for any of us to learn or turn over a new leaf though myself included .
I got PMs almost daily from other members asking why nothing is done when they themselves have brought this problem to the staffs attention .
I have no answer but to say I am frustrated also ..I can not fix or even do anything more then I have . I put myself out here as the bad guy for no real good reason according to some ? I did and do not see any other options other then just let it go which I feel is wrong IMO.

I appreciate all the kind words [I don't need a hug ] ,but would love if everyone thought about what they post and maybe even read the Original Posters post before responding to a thread .There are a lot of other people here who seem to ask questions answered in the first post of many threads [this thread even ] ..How can responding to a thread you did not read help ? If you are here to brag or whatever make your own thread ,if your here to help others read their post and carefully consider if you have any valuable input .It is nice to want to help ,I enjoy it more then some could ever believe but wrong info and sidetracking others thread does not help the member ,this forum or the hobby IMO..
I know when I think my advice might put someones fish at risk or their interest in the hobby to be lost I don't respond or caveat my concern ...It really is not that hard .
But following post that have nothing but pure opinion that is not fact disguised as information is not something I plan on competing with . It is a no win IMO.
I will miss trying to help many new members who now will never find me or that I will get to meet ,but hope some of you are not afraid to PM if you think I can be of any help . I feel the worst for my ram brothers and sisters as those poor fish need more help then this forum does and more then this forum will ever be able to offer again .There are real losers in this unfortunately but it can be fixed ..Unfortunately I will never know if it is or not now though . Please be nice and think of others here and in your daily lives..We all need to band together and find common ground not differences .

Tom
P.S.
For everyone who hopes it is not them re read the first post .If you have been here longer then 2 1/2 months and are not a HIM with 3,000+ post, you just need to focus on the last part of this post as I have tried to explain how responding to something you did not even read is a waste .The member knows who they are as several have told me so if you are still wondering it is not you !
And again he really is not the problem but more a symptom ..The staff here are the problem IMO ,they don't do their job .
With this I am sure to be banned or this post will be deleted so sorry everyone .
This post was not meant to beat anyone up although I feel real damage has unfortunately been done .I apologize for that .I guess I could have just left quietly but really did not want to but now feel no other choice then to limit my participation .
Please be nice to each other and most of all enjoy keeping fish and share the joy with others .
