I read about the hard and soft wood, this is definitely hard. How do I know it is the right kind? Is there a wrong kind? I found it on the beach. I know it's small and not very impressive, but my tank is only 10 gallons and the current driftwood in there is dwindling. Also, how do I clean it?

Just boil it good let it cool and add it to the tank. As far as knowing if its the right kind, that depends on your fish. Is this for a pleco?

What are tannins that I keep reading about?

It makes the water stained and looks like tea. Its actually healthy for fish, but I like my water crystal clear. If you dont want tennens just boil your wood drain the pot boil it again, keep repeating this 5-6 times.

A rubbernose doesn't need wood but as decoration it looks fine to me.
