Ideas On A 10 Gal Tall Aquarium

I want to get a 10 gallon tall aquarium with a few fish. I have a couple tanks but I don’t know much about plants. Any plant, fish, and anything else for ideas on how I should build a tank?

Idk. I want something different I have a lot of the basic fish like guppies, barbs, Gormies. I want to make a tank that is heavily planted with a hand full of fish that like living in smaller spaces and planted spaces.

You could do a female betta sorority if your doing planted. However do a ton of research first. Or a male betta with tank mates.

I’m just concerned about a 10 gallon sorority. It feels too small especially in a tall tank.
You could do a pea puffer tank. (Very different.)
You could do a betta, some shrimp and a nertile snail.
As for plants, once we know the type of fish you want, there’ll be lots of plants that fit your tank.
My question is which of these plans appeals to you?

I’ve been looking online a little bit. I think I’m going to go with a Betta but more research to go.

I’m thinking more towards a Betta now that looked up some tank ideas. Just need to do a lot of research because I’ve never owned a Betta before.

You can’t do a female betta sorority in anything smaller than a 20 long.

Was just about to say that. You will need at least 6 females for a 20 long. No sorority in anything less than a 20 gallon long. No 20 gallon. Not enough room to swim. Then you gotta add lots of plants. Very time consuming and you need to have dealt with betas before. So no for beginners. For a 10 gallon tall I would think may be you could make it into a shrimp tank.

If your keeping a single male betta or female and not doing a sorority your fine. Bettas are perfect beginner fish. They are really hardy and hard to kill. I definitley recommend you get one. The only thing I would be concerned about is getting tank mates. Every betta is different. One betta could love tank mates and not care or one could hate tank mates and kill them all. There is videos on youtube about the perfect betta tank mates. If your betta hates tank mates and attacks them bring them back to the fish store but if he likes them then your ok. I've never seen or heard about a betta not being able to have tank mates. In a 10 gallon planted you should be fine. I recommend a betta.

Agreed! It must be a 20 long, not high.
Everything in this statement, extremely true.

It can be done in a 10 gallon planted.

You actually can. Especially in a 10 gallon planted. It's been done plenty of times.

Great minds think alike also I've had my own sorority. LOTS of hard work. Very time consuming along with finding the right female betas.

Well, nobody recommends it, so I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to the OP.
Sarah, I lost my sorority a month ago. It was too complicated, and I wasn’t free enough for the work.

A 10 gallon female betta sorority can be done. Idk where everyone is getting this 20 gallon from.

They can be difficult. So yeah I would not recommend it either which is why I suggested a single male or female.

It’s all over the research from which I use.
Let’s not push this further, it’s a non recommended idea that shouldn’t be done my a beginner. Period.

EDIT: Let’s also not call this information, “”

Yeah it should not be done by a beginner. Which is why I also suggested a single male or female betta.

Just because it "can" be done doesn't mean it should be done. You need experience in betas before trying to attempt that. The op is a beginner, so saying that the op can doesn't help.

I did a sorority, it wasn’t easy for me, and I’ve been fishkeeping for 12 years now.

Because of spacing issues, 20 long is recommended for the least amount of aggression. The more space, the less fighting, the less fighting, the better fins ect ect. Also, in a ten gallon, 3 bettas would be a pretty hefty bioload. Also, the op seems to want a tank that is relatively easy to care for. I’d describe a betta sorority as the exact opposite.

I lost my sorority a few months ago. Takes lots of work and time. If you don't have the time then simply don't try to have the sorority (telling the op). Also for what the last person said, 3 betas isn't a lot of bio-load.

I’d call three bettas in a ten gallon a light stocking, not quite heavy IMO.

As for plants, I’d try some java fern, anubias, moss balls, and maybe a rosewood sword. As for betta tank mates, you’ll hear people all the time saying that they’ve kept bettas with angelfish and lots of other freshwater fish. I actually have kept a betta with an angel because I’d had both for 3 years and they were both super chill and the tank is best described as a rock work jungle so that they can escape each other if need be. Cases like mine however, should be regarded as extremely lucky. (As in super lucky.)
These cases aren’t the norm. Some typical betta tank mates are gost shrimp and nertile snails.

I’d call three bettas in a ten gallon a light stocking, not quite heavy IMO.
I should specify, the three bettas IMO is heavy stocking if you want to add much else to the tank. Also, I really should rephrase, stocking isn’t really the issue as much as aggression. Three bettas with 1 betta/ 3 gallon it’s likely they’ll run into each other more often and have more fights than if there were more space in the tank/ less bettas (which really isn’t an option) . I think this is correct about sororities?

Anyways, let’s get things onto a better start!

Ryan Neidinger
Here’s a few good options and ideas for your tank!
You could do a few guppies, that’d be a limited stocking, you could only have a maximum of 3 - 5 guppies total. You could also do some smaller schooling fish, like Celestial Pearl Danios, Ember Tetras, Green Neons, or ChilI Rasboras.

I did bettas, divided for my ten gallon. It’s a male crowntail tank, I love it so much You could do that, or a betta on his own. Snails, and shrimp are options, you can try those too. I would be careful with shrimp and bettas, they may get eaten.

I hope you find something you like!

If you want more guppies then I would get endlers. They are much smaller and you can add more. You can also do what she suggested. Usually a betta with a few shrimp (your choice the kind) and some snails go perfect unless you have a tempered beta.
