Ideas For A 20 Long

I'm deciding to redo my 20 long. It currently has gravel substrate with some plastic plants and rocks, nothing special. I'm contemplating sand but would like to know any ideas on where to go style-wise. It is currently stocked with about 10 Black Neon Tetras and a lone Neon, I want to keep the Neon (and add more) to the tank I just want to know what other species and aesthetics I should add to make this tank fresh and appealing again.

WELCOME to Fishlore!!!

I suggest you go with sand. As far as the neon I suggest you rehome it In a 20 gallon long its best to only have 1 schooling fish and to have a larger group.

If you go with sand you can add a shoal of cories or kuhlI loaches! You could also add a honey gourami or DG if you want to add color to the tank!

As far as aesthetics you can never go wrong with driftwood and live plants.

Hi!
Do you want to completely re-do your look? What specifically are you looking for, like a themed tank or a natural look?? Can you upload a pic so I can see what it look like right now?

Sand is a great idea! It gives you more options for stocking and is easier to keep clean.
I would get a Betta
Bettas need warmer water than neons

Hey guys, sorry for the delayed response. This is a picture of what the tank currently looks like, I don't know which way I want to go yet but I feel a simple design will be where I want to go. Plus any stocking suggestions would be helpful

Stock-wise I would add a Bolivian ram and a shoal of corydoras habrosus, as well as upping your tetras. I think you could add more neons if you're attached to that guy (or have trouble rehoming him), but I agree with others that just one mid-dwelling school will probably look better.

Hi!
My tank has a gravel substrate and some plants, a small statue and logs in it to make it look like a river. My sister went for a more bare look than me and put a white gravel (but you could use sand) and added some shells and a few plants to make it look oceany. It really depends what look you are going for. For stocking, did you want to keep you neons in the tank? If so you could add some sort of bottom dweller like some loaches, African dwarf frogs or Cory catfish and maybe an angelfish or dwarf gourami pair. I am not sure how much you could add though before over stocking, so could someone else fill in how much you could add?? I do know that if you are keeping the 10 black neons and adding to the lone neon, then don't get anything that needs to be in big schools.
Hope this helps!!

I see where you are getting at about the one school of fish, but I kind of prefer a "busy" tank with a lot of movement which is why i'm favoring the 2 schools. I'm debating on live plants, so any suggestions for very easy plants that will not require much effort.

Java ferns, anubias, crypts, and swords are popular, easy plants to grow You would need root tabs for the crypts and swords. The ferns and anubias get tied to driftwood or decor and can live off of the fish waste in the water.

One school will not be less active than two, but it will tend to move as one unit more often. It's a pretty cool dynamic to watch. I would add more black neons and find a new home for the regular neon because of that. But, it's your tank so your choice of course!
