Any help figuring out what this is on my fish?
This guy hangs out away from the school sometimes but still schools a lot. Eats and is active. Sometimes looks like it may be breathing fast but not all the time, like now it looks normal and is never gasping or at the top of the tank.
Has been this way for around two weeks. Have been doing loads of water changes, small ones everyday.
Looks like its slime coat has gone on overdrive but no one else is looking odd at all.
0 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 5ish Nitrates
Temp is at 24c/75f

The one in question is the neon tetra, the orange guy just got in the way of one shot. I took about 50 pictures, these are the only ones worked.
I will re add them, I meant to have them so that they could be clicked on and expanded, I don't know how it is on your end but here they just pop up as smaller pictures.

Ah, those worked better! The first set wouldn't expand and just looked blurry. These ones do work and are much clearer.

In the third picture, I can see a couple of dots near the belly, just behind and below the head. Are those just reflections off the fin or is there something else going on?

I still can't see the excess body slime but that's usually a response to illness or irritant. Might be good to quarantine this one.

Oh good, I thought I added the link to make them expand the first time but I guess I didn't. Glad those are a bit clearer despite my horrid camera skills.

I think those are just scales reflecting a bit of flash, in life there are no dots. I had some ich due to my silliness and not quarantining that orange guy that photobombed. It was actually during the heat treatment that this guy started to go grey. I thought maybe a bacterial infection that got a head start with heat?

I am have two problems with the quarantine the second being my real problem, I am afraid it would stress him as he is schooling well with his neon buddies and he has been this way for a few weeks so it may be past the 'get it before it spreads' stage.
And my main issue is that I am using my quarantine at the moment, have some new fish in there. If it was clear I would have already stuck him in there and tried some pima fix or something.

Maybe do an extra water change or two for the next couple of weeks to support his healing? Or some Indian Almond Leaf, the tannins are supposed to have therapeutic properties. Just don't know if that's been proven yet...

Sounds good, I have been keeping up with the gravel vacs and water changes every day since the ich. Kinda got in the rhythm and they seem to like the new water getting poured in so I will just keep that up. Could it be that he was irritated by the high temps and is still feeling it?

I will have to look into the almond leaf, couldnt hurt and the neons like tannins I hear.

Some people don't like the look of tannin-stained water but some do. I find it gives a more natural look to a tank and my fish certainly seem happier! Good luck

Hey even if I don't like it I am willing to give it a shot! Not that he seems like he is in distress its just disconcerting to see something odd on such a little fish.

Thank you so much!

If you don't want to fool around with actual leaves you can buy leaf extracts, sometimes advertised as being for "blackwater" fish. Instant tannins

I will for sure keep my eyes peeled, but I fear I may have to order it online. These stores around here are excruciatingly understocked. Went to the one store near me that's 'the fish experts' and they were horrid. About five products and rows of tanks with no fish, the tanks that had fish were looking poorly. Cant even find a lick of Java moss or fern or any of the best for low light tanks plants. Thinking online ordering will be my best friend.

Darn You need to start a local fish group! Then you can get together with other enthusiasts and do a bulk order every time you need stuf

Now that's a brilliant idea! If I was more social I would jump on that With all the things I want I may just be able to toss a bulk order together myself.

Ah I see they are used in Discus tanks, I happen to live right beside a store that has loads of Discus tanks. Cross my fingers that they would have some.
