I have 3 cubic feet of OMRI listed 100% Canadian Sphagnum peat moss that I use to brew tannins for my 55 gal. It’s much more “cost effective” to me. Are IAL tannins required for conditioning and spawning? I was thinking of using those tannins and floating java fern for the bubble nest. I’m sure I can find styrofoam somewhere in my house too. Good plan?

The styrofoam is a good option. Tanins aren't a must but they are recommended. They are beneficial for the fish and reduce the chances of bacterial infection and so on. Some people say it also activates the bettas "sense" to spawn.

I collect leaves outside already submerged at a local blackwater lake . . . in NJ. Tannins can happen naturally pretty much anywhere and is not strictly geographical, and I doubt most are a result of IAL. I do a quick rinse under the faucet and toss them in, and I've had no issues. In nature it isn't just a few leaves. The shorelines can be covered by them.
