I want ANOTHER tank

So we went to the LFS today to pick up some plants, and I saw the coolest little square tank and stand combo...very modern looking. I am kind of in love with it. The problem (other than all my other tanks!) is that we are living in a temporary apartment until our new house is ready, and my spouse says no more tanks until after we move! This is totally reasonable, but my fish obsession does not care about REASON. LOL Just wanted to tell you guys because you might understand!

Oh no! Maybe buy it and hide it in a closet until your house is done so you have it for sure!?

I think Mike is probably legally obligated to put a warning about the mts infection here, and that its super contagious. Haha, or maybe we should keep spreading it lol.

Did I tell you about the new Rotonda West ,Fla tradition of a post birthday present.. It is a relatively new tradition but is now part of our rules, regs and deed restrictions. I definitely think you deserve it. AlisonAnd a belated happy birthday.

I will be glad to sign the gift card in my own handwriting just so that her hubby knows she didn't sign it herself. Thank you so much for the happy Birthday but I came on tax day... April 15.

I understand. I got a 40G Breeder at the dollar a gallon sale (plus internet discount) because it was just too good of a deal to pass up, even though I didn't even really know what I want to do with it yet

I haven't gotten a stand, filter, heater, etc yet. To this day, it's still just sitting there empty on my floor. I will stock it eventually

So I've got a 16 gallon and now I want a bigger tank. Haha
I've got a wall where it is now in my main living area that's a little over 6.5 ft. I don't necessarily want the tank to take up that entire space but I would like one that would eventually fill it up better than the tiny 16.
I am planning on keeping tabs on Facebook marketplace for some cheap tanks, but I might also just save up some money and buy a nice one on Petco/Petsmart/Amazon. I love the rimless look so I was looking at the Seaclear ones.

However, I'm stuck on the best size for me personally. The largest tank I have ever had was 29 gallons. I really do not want to get crazy and get anything over 55. However in some ways I think 55 is a bit too big for me. So I am sort of stuck between a 30g and possibly a 40g? I had someone tell me a 55g is really ideal but I just feel like that might be a bit out of my scope right now. But if you have good reasons for going that route let me know.
I also do not want to break the bank buying all the things for it, I really just want a tank big enough for some bigger fish I have never been able to keep before such as an Angelfish maybe (not set in stone idea but they would be cool)? I'm also all about live plants so I plan on making it completely planted just like my 16g but I may use pool sand instead this time for cost cutting.
I really just want to brainstorm some ideas with people that have bigger tanks so I can get some ideas for the future. I plan on building this kind of slowly so it's not an entire load of expenses all at once.
TIA!

Bigger tanks are easier to maintain. I always recommend 75s as the best starter tank. It has a great footprint that opens you up to so many fish. You should be able to find a used 75 with everything for less than $200.

If I had to do it over again I would have a 75 gallon instead of the 55 I have. The 75 is 6 inches deeper front to back but is the same length and height as the 55. Equipping a 75 shouldn't be much more expensive than a 40. A 50# bag of pool filter sand should be enough for the substrate.

Depends a lot on the fish you want for it. If you're set on angel fish you'll probably want something on the taller side. If the 55 seems a bit too big you could take a look at a 40 tall- it's the same height and width but a foot foot shorter. A 45 would also be a good option for angels as its 24 inches tall [as opposed to the 20 inch height of the 40t/55].
If you aren't set on angels I think a good sized tank in general is a 40 long/breeder. You can fit some decently sized fish in there or some schools if you go about it the right way.

Hmm, I will have to look into this!

That's interesting! I wouldn't of even thought about it relatively being the same size length and height.
I just feel like if I went up that much from a 16 I would probably have to recycle the entire thing.

Angels aren't a definite, but they are really cool looking and I am looking to try out some more fish I've never had. 40 long is definitely a strong contender as a generous step up from where I am at now. I'm assuming a canister filter is probably the best for a tank that size? I've only used HOBs.

If you like live plants, I highly recommend a 40 breeder or 75 gallon. Both of which have that 18” depth, you can really do a cool aquascape and a lot of plantings. A 40 breeder is an awesome size and manageable. You couldn’t keep angelfish in it though, for that I would skip the 55 and go for the 75.

I had a 46 bow front and it was really great. I got with the stand and other stuff for a really good deal at PetSmart. It was totally worth it. I have a 75 now which I found a little harder to decorate and fill basically. I looked into a 40 breeder for the good surface area but it was hard to find. The 46 kit DOES have ugly black seams though which I wasn't crazy about. I went from a 10 gallon to a 20 long to a 46 to a 75 haha. I think I liked the 46 best. I don't know what angels require but I think that's a good increase in size and I wouldn't do a 55-gallon like said above. Its really tempting but I'm glad I went 75. It's a lot more gallons and takes up basically the same amount of space in the house.

Thank you! And I'm just not sure I'm ready to jump to a 75 gallon just yet. Haha

I am going to look for that kit! The closest I've found so far was Marineland LED Aquarium & Stand Ensemble, 45 Gallon | fish Aquariums | PetSmart
It looks promising and not too crazy on the price.
I'm not sure I am ready to jump into a 75 gallon tank just yet. But it's definitely something to consider later down the road!

You can definitely use an HOB in a 40 breeder. I have an Aquaclear 70 in mine. $35 on amazon and it’s a great filter. I also have a sponge filter in it but it’s probably overkill

Okay great! I used Aquaclears on my 29 gallon and I have a seachem tidal right now and a sponge filter. So I definitely am a fan of filtration overkill. Thanks!

As mentioned by posters already, I highly recommend a 75 as well. A 75 gallon tank should be the new norm in place of a 55 in my opinion. Lots of options for a 75. Chances are if you have space for a 55 gallon, you'd have space for a 75 gallon.

I am not seeing the one that I got it was national geographic brand I think I don't know if they sell that anymore. I see the marineland one and also an aqueon 45g set (not sure why both)

Aqueon® 45 Gallon LED Aquarium Ensemble | fish Aquariums | PetSmart

The marineland lighting is decent. I don't know what filter they give you. Somebody mentioned AquaClear I think they're probably the best I have a marineland emperor (400?) That I use for "emergencies" very cheap works well. Good luck!
