I Think These Are Pest Snails - Help Please

Hello there!

In my 85 gal tank, I noticed a small snail on my anubias.

What's strange is is that I haven't added any new fish or plants into the tank in about 3 weeks. I did add some amano shrimp 3 weeks ago, but I "QT" them over two days in a 10 gallon with a sponge filter. Maybe one was attached to a shrimp? Idk. I find it weird. My plants are all sold in those pest free tubes, maybe this is just a minor slip up?

No idea what kind of snails these are but I noticed two. Both who I removed and smashed.

I have a nerite snail in there already.

Should I get assassin snails? I don't want these nasties to kill my anubias

Those are malaysian trumpet snails(MTS), they do breed like crazy but you can control them by not over feeding. They like to burrow in the sand which is beneficial in aquariums with sand to prevent any anaerobic pockets.

Those “pest free” tubes are a joke, they almost always come with snails. They don’t harm plants, especially not anubias.

That would appear to be a Malaysian trumpet snail. In reasonable quantities they are useful critters, sifting debis from your substrate, and turning it over, which prevents hatmful gasses from building up. They only eat dead vegetation, so your plants are safe.

They will explode in population if you overfeed. If they do, either sift them out with a piece of craft netting or trap them using a jar baited with lettuce and pleco pellets. Put the jar in the tank at lights out and remove in the morning.

They probably hitch hiked on the plants you got 3 weeks ago, honestly. It can take weeks, maybe even months, before you see snails that hitch hiked in. I have a tank I haven't added anything new to in well over a month and I just noticed ramshorn snails in it last week.

Like others have said, I agree, those are Malaysian Trumpet Snails.

Awww, so they're doing more to help than harm! I feel so mean killing the few I found!
I'll let them be. I'll be more mindful of feeding
Thank you!

Mts wre great snails not pests at all. I add them to all my tank.
