Turn the lights off and leave her alone. When a fish jumps out there isn't much to do other than put them back and see if they recover. If the tank is pretty deep and you notice her having trouble reaching the surface for a gulp of air then place her in a shallow dish and float it in the main tank. Tomorrow I would do a water change to prevent infection and speed healing. Adding Indian almond leaves will also help by adding tannins which both prevent infection and promote healing.

I've had fish jump ship before too and usually if they are still breathing ok once you put them back they recover. Expect her not to move too much for a little while and some fin damage. She may not recover at all so be prepared for that. Make sure you always have a lid on the tank and cover any small holes that fish could jump through.

Oh my gosh I am so sorry, I bet your heartbroken.

You need to get a lid, bettas love to jump. Is there a stress coat\ease conditioner you can buy or have on hand? Walmart caries some generic brands and is open late. I'd put Indian almond leaves in her tank as well if you have any. How hard did you step on her? Do you have more pictures? How is she doing now?

I didn't step on her, but I had a betta jump out of her bowl (many many years ago when I was a noob housed bettas in improper conditions and didn't know what I was doing). She was dry to the touch. Recovered and did just fine. There is hope. Please don't feel guilty, it was a freak accident and not your fault.

If she is having troubles swimming up for air, put her in a shallow dish of water from her tank, put that in another dish with a heater in it. That is what works well for me.

You can also put a betta hammock for her to sit on. It would prevent the swimming up and down. Regarding the broken back, you could possibly take her to the vet, but ensure its actually broken first. Let her recover for a couple days first, and make sure she's eating.

I had a fish who swam up and hit the glass and got paralyzed. He would swim somewhat straight when slow and then would try to speed up and spiral down in circles. He was ok for a few days and then I put in a net (hospital net) and he passed. Hopefully yours is ok if it can swim straight. I have another fish who swam up to fast and is missing an eye and is completely fine. These are all tetras and yes I lowered the tank water and have had no incidents since!!
