What else can I do besides water changes to help the healing process , and make sure this doesn't get any worse or become life threatening ?

With fin rot clean water, water changes and a cycled tank are kind of the best ways to heal it. I try not to use medications unless I really have to.

HI there,
There are some meds you can check out like Melafix, and I wouldn't hesitate to start on a medication if you really think you've got fin problems. Do more water changes, at least 25% daily until your friend is feeling better. Good luck!

Sorry guys, but I disagree.
If it is fungus you're right, but if it really is finrot (bacterial) waterchanges and Melafix won't do the trick.

Pimafix is the bacterial treatment one in that line snd they can both be used together for a week if you're not sure what it is and it's mild.

Melafix says: Heals open wounds & abrasions, treats fin and tail rot, eye cloud, mouth fungus and promotes regrowth of damaged fin rays & tissue.

I've used it myself with great results and I too am a fan of the 1-2 punch of using Melafix with Pimafix.
