This is gonna be bad...

So I sat down to finally try to relax in front of my 20 gallon long, and notice a ton small ramshorn snails on my glass, along with another baby Malaysian Trumpet Snail. I'm planning on getting some kuhli loaches, but that's gonna be a long time from now. I'm also going to start feeding less, maybe the fish will eat the snails? I really don't know much about pests. Any help is appreciated.

They won’t do any harm and will help by eating algae. They multiply quickly at first but it seems the population levels off according to the food available, so don’t overfeed. Many fish will eat the tiny snails and others will eat bigger ones, helping to keep the population down. I have ramshorns in all my tanks and I want them there. In the tanks with larger cichlids they disappear, but I keep replacing them from the big tank.

I guess, the thing is, they might outcompete with my nerite, and maybe my future shrimp I may get...

If feeding is controlled well, the population won’t get out of hand.

What kinds of fish do you have in the tank? It depends, some fish will eat ramshorns. Typically though, if the whole snail can fit in its mouth, it will probably end up in its mouth. If not, not as likely to.

Your nerite should be fine as long as the population stays in check. If it seems he doesn’t have enough to eat, you can add in vegetables for him to munch on. This doubles as a snail trap for the ramshorns, as they will all collect on the veggies to eat and then you can remove it and discard.

loaches dont know the diference between pest snails and pet snails. They may also eat any shrimp that you bought. Be careful.
