Hi guys, I am getting a dog in December and was wondering.....I have hard water. When I bathe the dog will the hard water create adverse reactions to his/her skin at all? The dog will be drinking purified, clean, bottled, spring water but I am talking about bathing. Will bathing his/her with hard water create any reactions. Thanks in advance. Also, I haven't gotten the dog yet, I will get it in December.

Chances are no, but like with anything, there is a possibility of an allergic reaction. The chance is so miniscule, that I wouldn't worry about it. I am from Northern Michigan and the water this is literally liquid rock, like 325 TDS of hardness (18 dGH), and my parents dogs have no problems.

Another thing you could consider is getting a plastic carboy from your local supermarket and just refilling that everytime your dog needs water, even for yourself too so you aren't using as many plastic bottles. To refill 5 gallons its only like 1.50$ from that water dispenser machine, and the TDS out of that is like 13 last time I got it.

Oh-h-h-h, okay. Thank you so much! I will check out that plastic carboy you mentioned.

I've been bathing in and drinking high pH hard water for 59 years and I'm not dead yet, so I'd be astonished if it would hurt your dog. I wouldn't even bother with buying water for it to drink, much less bathe in.

Dogs are wonderful companions and are pretty sturdy. There is no need for fancy water, plain old tap water is fine. Just fed him/her a good quality food and they will be fine.

As long as dogs drink and swim in this kind of water I wouldn't worry. They are not made out of wax. BTW you shouldn't wash dogs too often anyway.

You didn't direct that question at me, but I'd suggest asking your vet.

Hahahahaha I was just thinking about that.
My lab is 9 years old and I think I washed her about 10 times or so hahahaha.
It all depends on the breed, their behaviour, how dirty they are. Last weekend Bliss (my lab) jumped in a muddy ditch haha.
I let her swim in a canal afterwards so the mud was rinsed out, dried her when we got home and their you go.
Bathing is a human thing so we can't project that on animals.
Wolves NEVER take a bath do they?

Of course if they smell / stink I'd give her a bath. But not that often.

Dogs sometimes roll in poop and sometimes even eat it. With that in mind, I think they will handle hard or soft water for bathing or drinking just fine!

If you can wash your hair with that water, the dog should be fine too.

My PH of tap in my fish tanks is 8.2 and my dog is completely fine. She drinks and bathes in it. She drinks out of our pond too. There is no need to buy special water. Dogs aren't picky and sensitive like fish

How often it needs bathed can also depend on the breed and therefore coat! Some dogs have naturally drier or more oily skin.
I have a heeler mix and I like to bathe him every other week so he doesn’t get the furniture dirty. At the groomer where I used to work, a lot of our poodles, shih tzus, yorkies, and other “hair rather than fur” breeds got bathed weekly. If you want to do it that often you need to use conditioner (there are ones made just for dogs).
And to answer your original question, bathing in that water is fine. I give my dog water from a brita pitcher to drink but tap would be fine, they’re tough.

Hahaha, That's true but wolves probably stink like there's no tomorrow, lol. I guess I will see and yes, it does depend.

Yes, I have heard horror stories about dogs and poop......

My water is the exact same ph and that's good too hear they aren't sensitive.

Oh! I was thinking of getting an American Eskimo or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I am still deciding.

Yeah, I agree. It definitely depends on the dog and breed. I very carefully picked the shampoo and conditioners. I picked a brand called 4-legger. The ingredients are soooo natural!

Honestly, unless you get a really high maintenance dog, dogs aren't sensitive to 99% of things...

Yeah, I am a newbie to dogs so, just wanted to tick every box. I also wanted an easy dog to start.

Just wanted to ask all of you, what food do you feed your dog? I was thinking of feeding my dog raw, fresh food, or the Orijen dog kibble. Orijen's kibble has amazing quality and ingredients. Low in carbs too!

Specifically as they will prefer water from the nastiest puddle they can find...

I LOVE american eskimos. All the spitz breeds really, but they have such a distinctive look. It sounds like you’re really doing your research so I’m sure you’re aware of the potential health problems in Cavaliers. They are so cute though... and the ones I’ve worked with definitely have a “big dog” personality which is fun in their little bodies.

Orijen is a good food. Dogs do need some carbs, and unless they’re actually allergic, some grains as well. There is a connection between grain-free food and heart problems. Again, I bet you’ve come across this already but I thought I’d mention. Keep us posted!
ETA: I have to change foods every so often because my guy is a picky eater but Orijen, Acana, Diamond, Merrick, Instinct have all been big hits

Yes, Cavaliers are prone to ear problems so, I will get a dog ear cleaner and clean his/her ears out with the solution every 1-2 weeks. Cavaliers also have joint problems, will keep an eye out. I will definitely keep you guys posted! Yes, I agree carbs are important but ideally, u want fewer carbs, more vitamins, and meat. Thanks!

What?! Really? I didn't know they have numerous health issues..... I mean they mostly have joint issues and ear infections which can be solved with vitamins and fewer carbohydrates and to clean the ears out with a solution regularly, don't worry, I got this. (hopefully, lol)

I will! I know, Both dogs and fish are pretty amazing! Though, I love cats as well.

Also, did you guys know that selling a puppy under 8 weeks of age is illegal in most states. Puppies, when sold under 8 weeks, can develop anxiety, social problems, and even aggression when separated from their litter at too young of an age. It's a fact. When I am looking for a puppy if it is under 8 weeks of age, no matter how cute it is I can't take that puppy. 8 weeks is the minimum.

Oh really? That’s probably why my dog as anxiety issues we got him from a shelter when he was maybe 2 weeks old and now he’s two but can’t leave anyone in my family’s side or he freaks out

Yes, I was surprised too. Because when you are a baby for example if you are forcefully taken from you're family at a young age you probably be withdrawn, aggressive, have a temper, have anxiety. Same with dogs. I agree, It was quite surprised when I heard it, and I researched it and it is true.

There is no surefire way to prevent heart disease in dogs, especially since several common types are congenital. But you can take steps to help your dog live a healthy life. It's always important to feed your pooch a healthy diet that includes Taurine (amino acid) and Omega-3 Fatty Acids (fish oil)

Besides, American Eskimos are too energetic for me.

hahaha, lol. The reason it is good is because it has no chemicals and fillers. I am not joking. They sell it on PetCo and Amazon. here are the links. I mean look at the ingredients. They have no words that are hard to pronounce. If a dog food has a bunch of list of words you can't pronounce stay away from it.

For the Orijen Original food Here are the ingredients:

Deboned chicken, deboned turkey, atlantic flounder, whole eggs, whole atlantic mackerel, chicken liver, turkey liver, chicken heart, turkey heart, whole atlantic herring, dehydrated chicken, dehydrated turkey, dehydrated mackerel, dehydrated chicken liver, dehydrated egg, whole red lentils, whole pinto beans, whole green peas, chicken necks, chicken kidney, chicken fat, lentil fiber, pollock oil, whole green lentils, whole navy beans, natural chicken flavor, whole chickpeas, ground chicken bone, chicken cartilage, whole pumpkin, whole butternut squash, mixed tocopherols (preservative), sea salt, freeze-dried chicken liver, dried kelp, zinc proteinate, kale, spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens, whole carrots, whole apples, whole pears, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chicory root, turmeric, sarsaparilla root, althea root, rosehips, juniper berries, dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried bifidobacterium animalis fermentation product, dried lactobacillus casei fermentation product.

See? Amazing. No chemicals or fillers. here are the links for the food. Here is a review of the food from amazon:

I have an 11 year old Dachshund. I started feeding this to him a while ago after switching from Blue Buffalo to honest kitchen. The honest kitchen is good dog food, but it is a lot of work. Getting the ratios of dog food to water perfect and order to have a good consistency of poop and still express anal glands is not easy. My dachshund began eating this and immediately I noticed that he had more energy, his health was improving, and his coat looks better. He was suffering from dry skin, which is now gone. I also feed this two dogs that I bring into my home when I am fostering. We rescue dogs from the meat market here in South Korea and when they come they are often malnourished, dehydrated, and severely abused. This dog food is absolutely the only dog food I will ever feed any dogs that comes into my home. It has brought puppies back from the edge of death.
