You need to wait... nothing else... Just keep feeding your tank (so ammonia will form), the articles on tank cycling say that Nitrites will reach around 0.5 - 1.0ppm and then start to drop. Since you said your other readings were "perfect" I'm assuming you're getting 0.0 ammonia - you really don't have long to go, just keep doing what you're doing.

You might also want to be carefull not to make the mistake I made with your nitrate testing - that bottle#2 in the test kit really does need a good shake to mix the crystals in the solution. Once you start getting Nitrate readings your nitrites will drop off quickly.

Some other advice I'll offer (if you take it or not is up to you), there's a "pet's direct" or similar near Godfreys in Cranbourne - I would not get your fish from them, I was in there today and many of their fish are diseased (advanced stages of dropsy and finrot that I saw easily) they also mistreat their bettas. They do stock a large variety or other products such as decorations and foods etc, but the staff aren't very knowlegeable, and their poor advice led to me losing over $60 in fish because I trusted their product reccommendation for "fast cycling" my tank.

Nitrite poisoning is a cruel way for a fish to die - please have a bit of patience mate and I look forward to hearing about your happy fish in a week or so!

Very wise - Always be carefull about revealing ANYTHING personal on the internet or MSN etc - even your blog is a little more revealing than I'd allow my own kids to have... but I'm not your Dad and it's not my place to be critical. I don't know if you've ever seen the reports on shows like "A Curent Afair" where police pretend to be kids, win the trust of other kids and get them to reveal stuff about themselves over a period of time... a little clue here, some reference to a hobby there, and soon enough they have a whole profile on the kid. Then they pay a visit to the parents and show them the report they've compiled on their child and how easy it is to let your security slip.
