I have had my tank going since 4/12/2020. My water is tested every day:

PH 7.8
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate is typically climbs to 5 between my PWC’s.

Early on I lost a guppy (about 2 weeks ago), yesterday I lost a harlequin Rasbora, and today I have another dead guppy. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. My 2 platies, 2 remaining guppies, and 7 harlequins seem fine. I’m about to do my weekly PWC and tested my water and the only number different from above is Nitrate at 10ppm. Is fish loss inevitable? I’m just so broken hearted and discouraged.

One of my platies seems to be hiding a bit, but she looks great and eats well.

It’s a 20 gallon tall and set to 77°. I just looked and it’s about 79°.

I tested my water before a PWC today and:

PH 7.8
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10

I did a 4.5 gallon water change and tested the water again and my readings were as follows:

PH 7.8
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5

This is the first time my nitrate went that high. Should I do another partial water change tomorrow? What would all of a sudden be driving my nitrates up?

well, 5 is not high for nitrates. it seems most of us here are happy as long as theyre in the orange, or under 20-30. do you have live plants?
Thank you very much for your feedback, it is very appreciated.
