I Need A Second Filter.

I have a 50 gallon with a Cascade 700, but I was using Aqadvisor (I like using the filter percentage) and I want to get a HOB filter. I bought an Aqueon quiet flow 10 but it didn't fit over the edge of the tank... Is there anyway I can make it fit? Or just put the whole thing in the water and hot glue a hook on the back.

The quiet flow 10 will literally do nothing for you in a 50 Gallon. Buy a Marineland penguin. They have good quality HOBs from 10 Gallons to 55 gallon tanks.

Could I just get the 10 gallon Marineland? Or would I have to get a higher one.

Yeah for a 10 gallon you’d have to buy the Marineland Penguin 100

Why not get a sponge filter, its cheap great for biological filtration and helps oxygenate the water

I like sponge filters better, but I feel like with the HOB he can preserve more of the tank’s aesthetic.

Sound advice above.

I'll provide another option.

You can get an AquaClear 50, and turn it into a polishing unit. Take out the carbon and replace it with poly-fil. This will help keep your tank crystal clear and assist your Cascade in filtration.

That’s a lot of poly fil. I would do a layer of poly fil and put a sponge on the top of it.

Am I correct in assuming you only need the second filter for biological filtration? Or are you having problems with water clarity etc?

That's what I did on my 50. Have a sponge below and above the poly-fil to keep it planted. Good point

I have two penguins in both of my 29 gallon tanks and they are amazing. Keeps the water clean and clear.

I need a second filter for biological. And I think I changed my mind on the filter, would a Marineland penguin 200 biowheel work? Or would that be too much filtration? Or would a filter in around the 20 gallon range work for the biological. I'm thinking I also need another filter because of the bio-load I have. I have 2 Angelfish, 5 Mollies, 3 Platies, 6 Bronze cories, a Clown pleco, and 5 Nerite snails.

As long as your current filter is keeping your ammonia and nitrites at zero your ok with what you have. If its not then you will need another filter. A filter for a ten gallon tank will do little to help on a bigger tank.

There is no such thing. I’m a big believer in over filtration my filters pass 2500 gallons/hr between them and I have sand filters on them also to increase biological filtration by about 300% what the canisters can do themselves

So yeah, I'll get the Marineland penguin 200. It's meant for 50 gallons.

That'll do! How's the water clarity and parameters in your tank? And do you plan on adding any fish/inverts in the future? Can never have too much mechanical filtration.

The water is crystal clear, my nitrites were a little high but I did a water change and fixed those, and I'm almost 100% that I have my final stocking right now.

Thank you everyone that helped me!

One more question though, will a Marineland penguin 200 bio-wheel fit oovee the rI'm of my tank? The rI'm is about 1 1/4 inch thick. Give or take a little.

I got a HUGE deal on the filter mentioned above. It was originally 50 dollars, but through 2 coupons I got it down to 17 dollars!

It should fit, yes. To be sure you could always call Marineland. But it sounds like you already got it

Re: Marineland 200 and bio sponge filter: I know you said for aesthetics, you don't like the idea of a bio sponge filter, but to be honest, they are great. I just upped my size to a 75 gallon capacity in my 38 gallon. Doesn't make a difference in the look. Great for the tank, cheap as all get up. Bonus - The fish also love them. Once you have plants or your choice decor around it, it will not be the eyesore you think. In my 200 hob, I cut the top of the filter cartridges open and take out the carbon. To make everything fit, I have filter floss and seachem purigen in the back filter. In the front one, I have a sponge and bio rings (the store was out of matrix, and this does just as well.) I also added a pre-filter sponge to the intake tube. When cleaning the media, just rinse it out in the water you do your water changes and slide back in slot. (This too if you decide to add bio sponges.) Easy. You will also need to use q-tips in cleaning the hob crevices, such as the filter impeller and area it inserts into in order for the hob to work properly. In doing this, your bio-wheel will turn for a few days before slowing to an intermittent or not at all spin, which is normal.
