It is very dirty on the sides. It has green markings on the side. Anyone have any idea how to get rid of it safely?

Use white vinegar to get rid of the calcium deposits, everything else can be taken care of with just water and scrubbing. Also inspect the silicon edges to determine there won't be leaks.

I just washed my freebie 45gal with white vinegar and a scrub pad to get rid of the hard water/calcium. Afterwards I scrubbed the whole tank with warm water and plenty of table salt. Acts like a scrubbing agent without damage. Then rinse the out of it.

Came out spic-n-span clean
