Welcome to fishlore! I have had some experience with guppies and guppy fry. A 3 gallon will be a little small for them and a pleco.

Welcome to FishLore! I hope you enjoy getting to know the community!

Do you only have one feeder guppy in a 3 gallon?

I wouldn't put her in a breeding box given the size of the tank already. Do you know what type of pleco you have? Some can get up to 11 inches. They're usually recommended for tanks 29 gallons minimum. Do you have a plan for the fry afterwards?

I agree with everyone here, especially the fact that a 3 gallon will be small for guppy fry and that you should most definitely not have a pleco in anything less than 29 gallons.

I do have experience with guppies and fry, I have a 10 gallon of my own with 3 adult guppies, 5 juvenile fry, and about 30 newborn fry. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Another point I would like to make is that guppies are schooling fish. You should have at least 3 IMO to keep them from nipping and stress. Welcome!

Thank you I have a black with white dots and little whiskers in the front I think he is a I forgot the name it starts with a B though and They will get sucked up in the filter I have a HOB filter and I already bought a fish net box for them to live in I plan to let them grow in the net box and in about a month put them in a ten gallon about a month and a half then have all them

What is IMO?

Possibly a bushnose pleco? They can get pretty big. Mine are babies still. If yours has bristles then it's a male!
This is my little baby

Imo stands for in my opinion, plecos grow pretty big so they need pretty big tanks in the posters opinion

I would never put a pleco in a 3 gallon. I would only put the guppy in it.

Is the Pleco you are talking about a Bristlenose pleco by chance?

He is a small pleco and I'm upgrading to a 10 gallon soon so I think he'll be ok for now

IMO means in my opinion. Although you’ll find what I said isn’t just my opinion, but many other FishLore users as well.

A 10 gallon is still too small for a pleco in my opinion

Ok that's about the size of mine and it is a bushnose do you know what the white on the tip of some of his fins are

I will admit,
I was told it is possible, but that they are either very very tiny bristles, or they won't have them at all. Considering no one could post pictures of their females with bristles, I do believe it's more likely that they have a male if it's small enough for a three gallon yet has bristles.

One of my bushynose plecos has a little white on it's fins just due to how it's colored, it would be hard to tell if it's just the fish's color or not without seeing a picture of it.

I agree with you, it is way more likely it is a male, but I always consider even the tiny possibilities.

A pleco wouldn't be able to fit in a ten gallon anyway. But you may be able to put more fish in with a guppy if you upgrade to a ten gallon.
Do you have a plan for the fry once they are born?

he is ok to have melafix right? I gave my fish some melafix can it badly effect him?

yes theyll grow and when theyre big enough theyll go in the ten gallon

I'll see if I can find my white spotted pleco real quick and show you what it looks like.

I would not give your fish any meds AT ALL unless you are for sure they have an infection. White isn't always a need for meds, sometimes fish just come in different colors.

Eventually you'll have too many fry for a ten gallon. Female guppies can release 20-40 fry a month. If you post a picture of the guppy then we might be able to estimate how much time until she gives birth.

This is going to sound kind of dumb, but are you sure she is female? I have seen threads here before where people think their guppy is pregnant when they are actually a bloated male. Does the guppy have a pointed or triangle shaped bottom analfin?

Here is one of my healthy plecos to reference the excess white I see on mine.
It's not the same coloration that was on all the plecos in the tank I got them from, but these are what mine look like as of now.

Most livebearers act distant and more fearful a couple days before they give birth. I really wouldn't put her in a breeder box, it adds lots of stress to the fish and there will be lots of fry anyways.

Well then the fry will die because of the filter

so what would I do she may also eat them and the filter can suck them up

You can use the breeder box if you really want to, if the filter is strong you could cover the intake with a thin piece of sponge too. To avoid the mother from eating the fry, you can provide lots of hiding spots from decor and live/fake plants. However, just to warn you, they do make lots of fry. In a three gallon you won't have lots of space for fry. In a ten gallon, they will grow up and continue the cycle. That's why I prefer to breed livebearers the natural way: survival of the fittest. It may sound harsh, but it's difficult to keep up with the amount of fry that livebearers produce.

Any type of pleco should NOT get stuck in a 3 gal. Either upgrade or return for some stroke credit. Guppy maybe just 1-2. That being said, you can easily turn this tank into a snail tank, which I think 3 gal is more or less acceptable. And then upgrade your guppy and pleco to a 10+ or even better 20+ gallon (if he’s a bn pleco)

I know I'm not using a breeder box when I get the 10 ill do natural way after these guys does age affect the number of fry she had mated with the male when she was 3 months-4 months old

I have a Q will the pleco try yo eat the babies? or just mom

also My filter isn't that strong I have poly filter which is like a spongey texture should I put that around the sucking part will the filter still grab through?

What they're trying to say is that even a ten gallon won't be big enough long term.

I'm not too familiar with poly filter but you can use anything that's fish-safe that can cover the filter without blocking it too much. Just make sure it's somewhat porous. You put it around the intake.

I did it thanks I basically just DIYed a sponge filter

If water travels through it well then it should work.
This is going to be stupid but If I had more questions I wanted to make a new thread how would I do that? I can respond to others just can't make one

pure polyester is ok. The less pore size the more polisher the water is. I personally use 50 microns, which gives me a crystal clear water.

So at the top, you see the thing that goes "Aquarium Forum->General->Welcome to Fishlore" ? Click on the Aquarium Forum and you can go to the specific forums. I recommend "Freshwater Beginners" You just click "Post a Thread".
