I have a 29 gallon that I want to set up. I usually do budget but this time I want to set up a nice planted scape with good materials. I think I am going to go with eco complete as the substrate. I don’t know if I should 1) use 2 bags of eco complete or 2) use dirt at the bottom and cap off with eco complete. Please give me suggestions on what would be the best option for a nice planted tank. Thanks

I have used Fluval Stratum with great success, fully carpet due to the high nutrients. Eco Complete is actually a inert substrate with the nutrients being the water in the bag. A Walstad method is quiet difficult due to to much nutrients usually leading to a huge algae outbreak if you don’t have enough plants

The only thing I don’t like about stratum is the price. What do you think I should do?

If you purchase online it is a little cheaper than in stores, I filled at 75 gallon under $100 (which in my opinion isn’t that bad) you could use eco complete but with root tabs and ferts. After spending all that money on those it’s almost the same price as Fluval. I personally don’t know of any other plant substrates

How many pounds would I need for a 29?

I don't have experience with either (I use iron sand) but have read more positive reviews on Stratum than Eco Complete.
