I hate my job!

My hospital completly bites! I ended up staying over an hour tonight against my will, doing what?? paperwork, writing the same thing over and over... they complain about money, why not fix the process???!!

Not to mention I worked at a level 1 trauma center for a few years, where as a resp therapist I was treated as if I had a brain... (lev 1 means they take the most critical of traumas)

now at a sm town place I questioned a doc today for example and he looked at me with hatefulness and said "I ordered what I ordered so do it"... well an hour later what I said would happen to the patient did happen, and now possiblly the patient will die...
There is a pressure that builds up in the lungs on life support.. and there is a way to ad that pressure but only if that patient doesn't have it automaticlly doing it... he was, and if you ad it when they are doing it, you put massive pressure on the heart.... after so long you can make the person crash...
guess what... he crashed.. now his blood pressure is stuck at 40/20 (basicly a dead man laying in a bed tied down and living on life support thanks to the dr...
oh, he asked for the pressure to be cut off... after the neg effect happend... I told the nurse I have literally seen people flat line (that's the heart wave when you are dead) from the pressures in the lung built up so high, then you take that pressure out and the heart starts back... The doc knows I have worked in a hospital where the therapist call the shots and tell the doc what we did... he hates that!

Oh well...
they are building a brand new hospital next to the university up the road where they opened a new med school... and they will need a resp therapist or two.. the head trauma doc planning to transfer to that hospital knows me from my old job.... There is hope at least a year or two from now! If I kiss enough butt maybe I could get the management position w/ my years of experience.... they are also going to try to get trauma center status... I can't wait! I loved working at the trauma center, it beat these burnt out patients that dont' care about themselves who will cuss you out for the heck of it.

sorry for the vent, I spent 4 years in college for my degree, I am a critical care resp therapist... and am being treated as a resp treatment jockey......

 

Yea, we sure have one screwed system in this country, meant to make the scum at the top rich and the rest of us poor, sick, dead or all of the above.

 

Thankfully, the hospital my wife works at is trying to automate much of the paperwork process because they're having to fill out so much stuff on every patient, and are expected to still take on the same number of patients.

Doctors need to be reminded, daily, that the people around them know more about the little things than they do. My wife works with sick newborns, and sometimes is given bad orders. She's non-confrontational, so she has to take the long way around to get the orders rescinded, because she doesn't want to get into an argument with a doctor who thinks he/she knows everything.

 

boy oh boy.. don't even get me started on doctors.

My dad, who is now 76, spends way more then then I wish he had to in the VA hospital. You want an eye opener on doctors.. sit with a patient at the VA for 2 weeks..

 

Doctors are pretty much idiots. They get all the money so they don't have to drive last year's luxury vehicle, but it's the "little people" they step on who really do the work.

To be fair, not all doctors are like this. These are the ones you notice, because the other doctors are pretty much doing their jobs correctly and thus, you are seeing more of the nurse/PA/whatever, who knows more about you as a person, and knows more about the specifics of a particular problem. Doctors are kind of the admin of healthcare. They direct the workers around, and can either do so in a healthy, efficient manner, or they can abuse their power. As with admin, we only take notice of the ones who abuse their power because the others are pretty much invisible.

 

Simply put..."Doctors PRACTICE medicine" ..........I get upset with them too, yet at the same time, do try and think of what it would be like to be in their shoes (and they are the ones who want to wear those shoes, I know)

 

Unfortunately, the vast majority of human-beings devolve when given positions of responsibility/authority, which is why us cynics know humankind is vastly over-rated.. thankfully the few exceptions to that rule provide some redemption to the species.. sorry folks, I wish there was a better and more positive outlook to take on this thread, but it is what it is and won't get any better in our life-time.. what makes our current existence worth it, is the people we know and those of us who know wrong from right and live our lives accordingly, regardless to the level of sacrifice.

 

I still consider this to not be a matter of "most doctors are awful" but rather a matter of "we only notice the awful doctors."
As with any position of power, one corrupt individual with half a brain can outweigh half a dozen or more non-corrupt individuals, given time.

I do have to agree w/ that. I have some personal docs that are wonderful. 3 in knox that have caught stuff that my family doc has completly missed and one thing that she had my entire family scared to death about (a huge cancer scare! over a lymph node).... what did the surgeon say? no big deal.. and its still enlarged 2 years later.. I'm okay.
Not to mention she missed my thyroid levels bottoming out, and my debilitating pain I was having.. lets just say I went to a gyn doc, he did a lap surgery, fixed my bladder, and I have been pain free since, she just kept giving me pain meds...


So I do know the good ones from the ones who abuse their power... my old job.. the good ones luckily were a dime a dozen (that's why I go to knox for my docs and even take my children there)

The docs that work at my hospital have the I am smarter than everyone complex.. that's what kills me!

 

I'm just sick of all the corruption, greed, etc. that make health care and health insurance unaffordable for around 50 million americans.. and sick of doctors that push you out the door after you wait 2 hours so they can get more people in and make more money.. forget getting things right, just order up expensive tests and meds and accomplish nothing.

You could work & save your whole life and be wiped out in a matter of hours. Yes, there are a few good doctors and call me cynical, but I think most are all about the benjamins.

 

OH I know... what kills me is I know how much they get paid for stuff, and what really kills me, is oh say I do blood gases, well I go draw the blood, and run it in our blood gas machine. 9 out of 10 times I inturpet the gas to the doc, and suggest the therapy. I get paid 18-22 and hour depending on the time of my shift.... the doc gets paid 300$ for my blood gas I stuck, ran in the machine, and inturpeted, and suggested and treated......

I think they need a major pay cut if you ask me! If we get paid by the hour so should they!

If that was the case our er docs would be broke! I bet I could walk over right now to the er where I am and find our er doc asleep in bed 1 of our er on the cot, where as I have to find some means of at least staying awake and alert no matter what... maybe I am not going room to room right now..

you know.. just about some of the only docs I truley have a lot of respect for are pediatricans (some of them), the ped gi, ent, and lung specialists that helped my son when he basicly needed house md to step in, trauma docs that I know are in it to save lives, and then the volunteer docs.... not to mention the ones like my mothers who isn't in his office every so many weeks where he goes back to his home country to literally give his free service to poor people, and when my mother went a year w/o insurance he saw her for free, and gave her samples for her meds.

 

If only they were all like that.

Exactly, and how much they're getting paid should depend on the job they're doing. If a doc is doing surgery, that's a pretty big deal. You can't do that. My wife can't do that. That's the kind of thing a doctor (even a general practitioner) is for. Simple diagnoses, not so much. They are getting most of their info from the nurse or assistant, so why should they be the ones who get paid the most?

 

True, very true! Even within itself the medical industry gives people the shaft.
