I got an 50 watt aqueon heater from a starter kit. I'm using it in a quarantine tank for now since my 10 gallon tank is cycling but thw thing is it will stay on for like a 1 minute or 2 and turn off ( red light will turn off) the water is around 77-78 so is this heater defect or is that how its suppose to work??

That's how they work. They are constantly turning off and on. It takes around an hour to get to the temperature you set it on.

Yeah, that’s the problem with pre-set heaters. You can’t change the temperature on it. They’re already set to stay around 78-79F. the light on would indicate that it’s working.

It will get the job done. Adjustable heaters aren't very expensive if you need one in the future.

Unfortunately, I made the initial mistake of getting a preset heater. While they do tend to work great at maintaining the temperature, they can't be adjusted at all which may be necessary to effectively combat disease, speed up the cycling process, etc. I eventually invested in an adjustable heater for my tank.

I feel like mines not working tho. I turned the ace on in my room and the temp dropped to 76. It only turn on when I unplug it and plug it back in

I would leave it on and monitor the tank temperature. It may have needed a little bit to catch up to the running AC.

I recommend 100 watts to heat 10 gallons but as long as your home is not super cold a 50 watt heater should maintain 77.

That heater is oversized. Let it run and monitor the temp.

I'm currently using a 50 Watt for my 10 gallon tank and it works great. Mine is also adjustable so I am able to fine-tune it to the desired temperature. It is normal for the light to turn on and off, as this is how most aquarium heaters work. When the light is on, it is heating the tank. Like Kevin said, leave it on for a while and see if it can compensate for the air conditioning.
