I dont know what’s wrong with my betta

So, my betta developed dropsy. I’ve been treating her with Kanaplex for the past 3 weeks... and I think it’s gone. She’s no longer pineconing. However she is bloated. But because the bloating looks uneven I don’t it’s dropsy. She erratically swims every now and then and is lethargic. She also has fin rot but i’m going to be picking up some IAL to help with that. The kanaplex is not doing anything to help her “bloat” so as of last night decided to stop it. Any ideas on what she has?

 

I had a female with the same issue, it was a bump on the side that continuously got larger. I wasn't able to figure out how to treat it either, it never went away. Unfortunately, it got to the point where she was impaired and eventually passed.

Would you happen to have a photo of it closer up? Or, check the scales around the swollen area, in my case they were stretched out because of the swelling. I personally would stop medicating if you said dropsy has disappeared, do a water change if you medicated in the tank.

I am sorry that your poor little girl is going through this!

It looks like the area where she is bloated is actually where you would find some internal organs - the swim bladder, her kidneys...so this is going to be either organ failure of internal build up of fluid, or both.

The IAL will help with the fin rot. Aquarium salt will also help with that. Frequent small water changes will help, too.

I think if she were my fish, that I would give her some epsom salt baths to see if that will take care of some of the fluid build up. (1 tablespoon of pure epsom salts disolved in a gallon of water which is the same temp as her tank water for about 15 minutes).

I would also attempt a cocktail of antibiotics to see if they help. I use kanaplex (kanamycin) along with some neoplex (neomycin) to combat serious gram negative bacterial or fungal infections. Sometimes it helps, and at other times it doesn't.

There is also an antibiotic called Fish Mox (amoxicillin), which is a broad spectrum antibiotic that might help. I get mine on-line from Wal-Mart pet rx.

These are just some suggestions. I know that many do not like the use of fish antibiotics, but I always take the stance that I have to at least try.

Keep a close eye on her, and see if the swelling goes down. If it does, then GREAT!!!

If it doesn't, then you can try the meds that I have listed above, if you wish, or if she is suffering, then it might be time to euthanize her. I am so sorry to even put that into print, but it is something that comes with having an aquarium.

1.Get some dry almond leaves or banana leaves and boil those leaves to extract some tannins
2. Get a non transparent container and pour some tank water in it
3. mix ur boiled 99% almond leaf water with ur fish tank water in that container
4. slowly put ur betta in that container
5. put a slab or something to cover that container
6. try avoiding pellet foods and try live foods and avoid maximum contact with the fish
let he/she heal properly
7. everyday slowly check him/her


This method won't have 100% success rate but this is one of the best ways to do it

Hi! After researching some more, she's showing signs of an internal parasitic infection. bloated belly, erratic swimming, gasping for air, cloudy eyes (They recently turned from brown to black), and lethargic. So I decided to treat her with some API General cure to see if that'll help. At first, she was fine, however, when the API began to do its jiz, she starting gasping more than usual. Being the paranoid person I am, I did a petit water change to try to lower the concentration.

Whatever the API is doing it's messing a bit with her ability to breathe. She's now staying near the top of the tank and is going for air much more frequently. Maybe I overdosed the tank? I tried to pout as close to half as possible since her tank is 5.5 gallons and the packet states every 10 gallons?

Ugh, fish keeping is fun, but when the fish gets sick it turns into a nightmare. I frequently if she dies, I know I tried my best. :/

Maybe you could do a small water change to cut down on the amount of med in the water.

It's fine! I wouldn't describe the water as green. Just a bit cloudy. I can see why you probably didn't like it as it takes a solid 10 minutes to dissolve and then makes breathing for fish a bit complicated. BUT, I just treated her with her second dosage and she's taking it A LOT better. Maybe you should give it another try. Every fish is different after all.

And THANK YOU! She's doing much better. She's more active and the tummy bloat went down a ton.

BTW, sorry for the late response school has been a bit hectic. Haven't checked Fishore since Wednsday.

Noted! I actually haven't fed her in about a week and her stomach size went down a lot and her color is coming back! But she still cannot swim and is still lethargic.
