I Did A Thing... Pigeon Blood Discus

Agree, I was also concerned with spikes and during my research it was also mentioned by coralbandit with the amount of water changes it should not be a problem. Also, a few breeders do have sponges available with the "Discus" bio available?
I change 75% every other day with aged treated water at the same temp 84. I test the water in the tank and the aging container just to be safe. So far so good.

Good Luck!

I know exactly what you are going through. I must have watched the few vids sent by the seller a dozen times.Testing the water, fiddling with the tank to make sure it is perfect for them. Checking the tracking.
I was a little kid again waiting for Santa to arrive. LOL
Just remember, to have "Fun".

That’s exactly how I have been! It’s like the night before you go to an amusement park. I’m going to have a hard time falling asleep tonight knowing they will be arriving tomorrow!

Just seeing this thread. Sorry about your first pair. Petco isn’t the best place to buy discus. Someone here said Petco keep their discus in RO water. So if they were and you not knowing just the water may have shocked them. What size tank are they going into now?
Coralbandit suggestion of freeze dried black worms is working great for me. Everybody eats them. Find out what Hans is feeding his and buy some of his food. He’s fish should be parasite free and healthy. So no meds needed. Good luck. Waiting for pics. Thumbnail pics are working.

It’s a 45gal tall if I’m not mistaken. Just until the dollar a gallon sale goes and then I will be getting them a 70 set up sometime next year hopefully if moving goes as planned. But I was curious because I was looking into black worms but the cultures online are around $200+ wasn’t sure if your cubes are frozen or freeze dried. But that answered my question. However I have actually ordered some of Hans cobalt flake food that will last then quite a while. I have frozen beef heart but I might hold off on that for a while. Hans also has beef heart but it has special requirements for ordering. I just want to keep their food interesting and keep a good healthy variety.

Thing is his fish have been eating the same food all along. So you should buy some of what he’s feeding. I don’t think any breeder feed their fish flake food. You mix his with whatever you plan to feed them. This way as eating the original stuff they also start eating yours. Best way to convert to your food. Did the fish come yet? Once I’m up and running I do plan on ordering some discus.

Yes his fish have been raised on his flake food and also his beef heart mixture. However I didn’t purchase any beef heart because he doesn’t allow shipments of his beef heart with his fish. So I would have to purchase it separately either way. Which I may do sometime in the near future. No, they haven’t arrived yet however I have been watching the tracking on my phone and they are on a truck on the way to my house now. I will be leaving work to begin acclimating them as soon as they get there! I will be sure to keep you guys updated! I also have another thread for them I will attach below!

I bought my discus from LFS as well & they were extremely small, probably 6-8 weeks old and I added them in with juvenile angelfish I already had. My discus are doing wonderful, I do not change water everyday, nor do I do 90% water changes, when I did 90% right after the discus turned black (black spots & changed colors) & angels completely lost their stripes. First I treated the entire tank with general cure, ick x & erythromycin and it didn’t phase discus a bit. The angels acted more sensitive to medicine than discus ever did. Mines do not like their water messed with that much, they like consistent conditions. Their temperature is 84•, their PH is 7.2( I use neutral regulator & prime), I do about 50% water changes twice a week or when I see anybody’s fins look off. I feed flakes, tubifex, frozen baby brine shrimp & bloodworms. Anything that fits in their tiny mouths, they’ll eat it. I got the discus 11 weeks ago, they’ve grown and their aggressive like the angels, take no from the angels. Discus are really not as complicated as people make them out to be. They are already stressed from breeder to broker to pet store, etc. Yours discus is turning black is either sick or mad/upset cause it’s water conditions keep changing. Stabilize their environment, keep it clean, warm & they’ll be just like regular fish and last forever.

It helps tremendously to maintain water quality- make sure your filter is kept clean, nitrates & odor builds up in your tank if you don’t change nasty water & filter floss in canister filter & HOB filters have to be changed more often. Just don’t touch biological media, just change the filter floss/pads & carbon( if you use it). Purigen/ hypersorb you can use until it’s brown.
