I Could Use Some Advice On A 10 Gallon Community Tank

I currently have a 10 gallon community tank that houses:
1 dwarf gourami
2 harlequin rasboras
1 albino cory
1 mystery snail &
3 ghost shrimp

It has a top fin 10 internal filter or something like that?

And it also has the grreat choice filter that it came with. Which has all the beneficial bacteria in it. I plan to remove it eventually but I'm not really sure when it's safe to remove it.

The tank is the leftover of a trial an error sort of experience. It used to house a betta 5 tetras 2 harlequins a juliI and an albino cory. Basically everything does except for the albino and the rasboras. Overstocking and I'm assuming a ruined cycle. Which at the time I had not been paying attention to the nitrogen cycle. And after some time had passed and I gained more knowledge of the nitrogen cycle I got the gourami the snail and the shrimp. The cycle is completed now.

Anyways my other question is should I keep the harlequins and the cory? Or should I see if one of my local pet stores will take them? I know now that they need to be in schools and my tank cannot support the two schools. On one hand I feel bad giving these fish away after all this time. One the other hand it might be better for them. I realize now that I should have asked this question BEFORE getting new aquatic life. But the damage is already done.

Sorry for the long possibly misplaced post.

The 10 G is way to small for the aquarium and isn't secure without a group of 5 I'd recommend re-homing hi.

Welcome to the forum!

You should let the filters run together for at least several weeks to a month to seed. You can't over filter so the longer the better.

And yeah, I would take the cory and rasboras back to the store if you can, or find them new homes. I hate getting rid of fish too. But the tank could never keep schools as you said, and they really do need schools. It'd be in their best interest. Just keep the gourami, snail, and shrimp, that would be an amazing tank

Agreed with Fishpuns

I have Endlers (Green Cobra, Red Flame), Celestial Pearl Danios, Amano Shrimp, and Red Cherry Shrimp.

A 10 gallon can be a fun, and rewarding tank. Definitely run both filters, and stock it properly. I run 2 filters in my 10...an Aquaclear 20 & a sponge. I am moving my Aquaclear 50 over there with a 30 impeller.

Anyways, if you want a shoal of something go endlers. They are amazing.

Re home the corydoras and rasboras. They are both schooling fish and should be kept in a tank larger than 10 gallons with that stock.

Rehome rasbora, cory, snail,
and gourami.

If you want schoolers try CPD's, endlers, or just some chillI rasboras.

Hello and welcome to the forum. You could either upgrade the tank(20g) and get more of the corys and rasboras or get rid of the cory and rasboras and replace them with maybe 4-5 danios. Another option is getting rid of the cory and getting more rasboras. Look at the bright side at least you didn't go with Goldfish. Happy fish keeping!

Thank you all for the helpful advice & the warm welcomes. I gave the fish to a local store. Here's hoping they find a good home. Sadly, I don't have space for anything larger than the 10g.

Now I'm wondering can I still put more fish in the tank without overstocking it? & if so what kinds would you guys recommend? I still have the dwarf gourami the 3 ghost shrimp and the mystery snail. I'm not sure if it would be helpful but I have live plants in there as well. Anubias on driftwood, amazon sword, and duckweed. The anubias and the sword have already grown large enough to reach the top of the tank. @tommywantfishy your tank is lovely. I may look into endlers if space allows.

5 guppys or 8 endlers would be a nice way to complete the stock.

Was gonna say 5 male endlers....green cobra, black bar, red flame are awesome.

Also....could put in some red cherry shrimp. Prob 5-7. You should be golden with that. The red cherries will add a splash all over the place. And the endlers are just epic.

Thank you so much!!!

You definitely have room. I got mine off liveaquaria. They have really good customer service to be honest. Endlers are very hardy. I have seen some nice ones on ebay as well. If you want babies get 1 male to every 2 females. I went all male. Ha. 10 month old little girl is enough. I needed some more testosterone in the house too lol. My wife, female minI phantom goldendoodle Luna, and our daughter Lake. Ha.

I've actually been wanting to get some cherry shrimp. Although I wasn't sure how they'd do with the ghosts. I could probably move the ghosts if things went sour though. Could I mix guppies and endlers? Are fancy guppies okay? I have so many questions lol

Yes, you can. Almost all endlers in pet stores would be crossbreeds between endlers and guppys. Pure endlers are very expensive and rare as they are extinct or almost extinct in the wild. Pure ones also don't have all the different colourations crossbreeds have too.

Got mine here.

Welcome to fishlore!
I agree, rehome the gourami, cory, and rasboras, then get some smaller, suitable fish. You can keep the snail and shrimp, in fact you can get more shrimp.

Thank you all. You guys are all really helpful. I'll probably try a mix of guppies and endlers w/ a few cherry shrimp. I'll be sure to take care not to overstock this time.

@tommywantfishy Thank you for the link

I have seven ghost shrimp, five red cherry shrimp, and two neon yellows.. and several mystery snails living quite happily together. But I'm sure there are always exceptions to every rule.
