Huckleberry' Color Change log

I don't know if y'all are as fascinated by bettas who change colors over time as I am, but since I got a new, more powerful hood light on the betta tank, Huck's been changing his spots. (So I guess I know he's not a leopard!)

September 12th, 2016 - Huck comes home with me. Both eyes are black, and he's kind of orange and muted orange.

September 16th, 2016 - his colors deepen and brighten as he realizes he's not in a tiny cup anymore.

September 21st, 2016 - his new 10 gallon is cycled and he can move in. Colors super bright, but I suspect he is going to start turning white...

October 5th - after having a new light hood on the tank for a solid 24 hours, I notice he almost looks sick, there's such a change in his white face (he's not sick, but it almost looks that way)

October 6th - I wake up to see one of his eyes has turned blue, and the white is just creeping back along his body. The black part of his dorsal fin is turning clear, even. I suspect he isn't turning "white" so much as he's just turning "clear."

Anyway, I'll probably be updating this as he changes colors further. Only because I am fascinated and I suspect I'm not the only one who is.

He's gorgeous! The cellophane(clear) parts of his fins sounds so cool!

If he would just ignore the camera instead of rushing up to the front of the glass to investigate and then try to see my face by zooming back and forth in front of the glass when I try to take a photo, I could get a picture of him flaring and SHOW you his emerging cellophane analfin!

Cellophane starting on the front of his analfin. It used to be a somewhat translucent black.

Moved the lighting a bit and he decided to chill in front so I could take this photo. Hard to see colors, though.

Oh he's gorgeous! Wonder if my guy will change color? I love how much Hucks color brightened up in the tank

So, not sure how well it translates in this photo, but there are now "dull" areas of black and "bold" areas of black on Huck. I suspect the dull areas are future white areas.

Also, see, I caught him showing off to Finessa, who appears to be perfectly content with her wardrobe:

Maybe a girlfriend for him? She is also beautiful by the way

She is gorgeous - she doesn't have his winning personality, however. Also she seems more interested in going to the surface, squeezing out some eggs and then eating them before they hit the gravel.

If I could predict when that was happening and catch it on video, I would! It's a pretty cool trick since I'm not actively trying to breed them.

My thought process is that one day I will get a 75 gallon tank, start setting it up to be heavily planted (eco complete is pretty cheap on Amazon...) then try to breed these guys and while the tank is cycling/growing out, see if I can't get maybe 20-30 females that are even 2/3rds as beautiful as Huck and Finessa that can live all together in the 75.

This will require that I live somewhere a little bigger, however. I may not be able to do that. But I like to think about it and these two provide plenty of happiness being just how they are.

Some sort of snack? Isn't that why the males catches them? And chases the female away? Oh I hear ya! I have to remind myself I do not have the room for 20 5 gallon tanks and 19 bettas! One betta in a 10 gallon is enough!

Oh wow! Thatd be awesome to see a sorority that big! My LFS had a sorority tank and all the girls were photo bombers hehehehe. Bettas are so entertaining in my opinion

I know this isn't Huck, but how did I not notice Finessa is turning black?

Photograph your bettas, folks! Or they'll change on you and you'll never even realize it. Omg.

Lol! My betta Luna usually is mostly blue on her body, then when I feed her some of the blue goes away! I'm super confused, because isn't that the opposite of what's supposed to happen?

I don't have any pictures right now, but I will get some one day, lol.

She's only blue because you're not feeding her. Feeding chases the blues away!
