How Would You Stock It?

  1. Littlebudda Well Known Member Member

So trying to get some ideas for stocking here are the guide lines.

    1. Tank will be 300ish gal
    2. Foot print is 6 x 2.5
    3. Tank will be heavily planted with well established plants.
    4. Needs to have some American cichlids (severums if possible not essential)

All suggestions will be looked at and top 5 suggestions will get put to a vote

I like this except not a single plant would last with the silver dollars

That school of congos would look awesome

    I like both of these

I have 8 in my 75g with some nice high plants in the background, their colors are truly stunning, I wish I had room for more of them!!

The beauty about asking people for stocking advice is you can take little something from each that you may like and create your perfect stock.

Let me fix that for you....

A couple severums is definitely good.

And 5 geophagus red head tapajos (Stolen from above, good idea)

A handful of fancier plecos, A scarlet plec if you can find one.

A lot of the ideas are around what I have been thinking but slightly changed I really would love a big school of dollars but I'd prefer a planted tank. But 30 or 40 Congo would look sick

Also should mention that the tank will have 3 huge canister filters will turn over about 2500 gallons per hour total so filtration is not a problem

Well shoot. Forget my "or" lol in the community type lol.
  13. JesseMoreira06 Well Known Member Member

my stocking suggestion is with all that filtration.

What makes you think it will be planted lightly with munched plants?
  15. TwoHedWlf Well Known Member Member

Other than severums loving to devour plants?
  16. Littlebudda Well Known Member Member

Had 6 severums in the 330gal heavy planted and the only time they did much damage to the plants was when I go on holidays for 3 weeks and they only get feed once in the middle of the second week

You seen my tank? You can get away with silver dollars as long as you keep fast growing hardy plants they do good with anubias (not a fast grower but tuff) elodea in my experience, my sev is worse for plants i think he is a devote vegetarian lol. Silver dollars are sooo good, just having my morning coffee and haven't put the lights on, im enjoying my dollars in the sun. eb4269e7794289bb39d435861a9c0382.jpg

I found that if you feed heaps of veg to the severums they don't touch the plants but when I've had dollars they just take out anything green.

Ah right i just think there a great compliment to a big tank and id live to see a shoal of about ten in your big 300 lol. Maybe not? I remember some of the plants from your old set up are they the ones you are keeping? They are nice well grown plants.

Hahah hey @grantm91! If your like me, at some point, had this thought of "that would make a magnificent reef tank :p". Jk tho...the FW options sounds really cool so far :)
