roflMy first dabble was about 25 years ago. I was a wee lad and thought it would be really neat to put a bunch of minnows from our minnow traps in our creek into a glass aquarium out in the barn. When I say a bunch, I mean a bunch. I'd say I probably put about seventy 2-3 inch long minnows in a 10 gal. No filtration, no airstone, nothing. It also got up to about 100 degrees in the barn during the hot summer days. Needless to say it was not a success, but I am doing a little better these days![]()

Hope y'all caught some nice channel cats with that at the leastThe plus side of my first attempt was I learned how to make chum. Ever dump out a bucket of rotten liquified fish that have been sitting in 100 degree weather for a few days? Some things will haunt me till the day I go, and that smell is one of them.
I wish like Hades that my kids would take interest. My youngest does like my "sucker fish"(plecos), but has no interest in helping feed them or even really watching the fish eat. Except occasional platy fry watch. And the oldest....well, even at 21 she neglects everything pet-wise(currently 1 leopard gecko and 2 cats...the cats pretty much have bailed on her to us). Some of the best choices I've ever made in the hobby:
- Buying live plants and a bottle of fertilizer
- Getting my kids involved and excited about the tank
- Sourcing things from overseas to keep costs low
Some of the most challenging situations in the hobby have been:
- Dealing with algae brought in on plants
- Allowing my kids control over my tank genetics ("Daddy, we CAN'T sell THOSE guppies!!!!")
- Importing some products internationally.
It's all a double edged sword, it would seem!
