Hey guys,

How can I know if I find rocks, that they are safe for aquarium use, are you able to tell what is in them just by looking at them, or will a proffessional be able to do so?

If not I've heard poring distilled vinegar shows up stuff, but what does it show up? what other methods are there?

Thanks!

the vinegar is more to tell if it will raise the pH of the water. As for rocks in general you could consult an expert but I usually dont.

I have just found that the alternatives are so expensive as anybody who wants to sell rocks in South Africa requires a mining permit. So I don't see harm in going to the side of one of my farm roads and using it in the aquarium.

But if I am completely unsure I will consult a pro.

Please explain how that vinegar works... how would I use it?

just drip it on, if it bubbles it will raise the pH of the water, it is a down and dirty test method but it works.

Sure, most rocks can be used. River rocks are great, I don't know if you have access to Lava rock, but you should.

Go to a local river, creek or stream and have at it.

I use rocks from my beach... all I do is scrub them in extremly hot water and through em in during setup I personally have never had issues with my rocks raising any perameters.

Okay thanks guys

Is there any warning signs I should look for in rock? Is there any preventative measures like curing it or something like that which can reduce the risks?

Good morning,

If you get rocks from a creek, stream, river, you may want to pour some boiling water over the rocks to remove any unwanted critters. Do not boil the rocks as they may explode. Children, please ask your parents or an adult for help.

Thanks Ken,

That is REALLY helpful.

PS: Can the same principle of styrofoam and drylok be applied to make rock bridges etc?
