5 Gallon Tank How to use Kanaplex with Fluval Spec V

Hi!

I’ve been debating on treating my betta’s fin rot with kanaplex or not. I’m using the filter that came with my fluval spec v, which is built right into the tank itself. It has a carbon portion to it, and I’m wondering what I’d do with that while treating with kanaplex. Would I just have to throw it out...? I’m still not sure if it’s the route I want to go, but the water changes and Stress Coat haven’t made a difference so far.

Is there any other media in there besides the carbon bit? Is it in a sort of floss packet? You may be able to cut the carbon out if it is.

I perdonally avoid medications when I can when it comes to fish. Unless the finrot is particularly bad you should be able to treat it with increased water changes. I also like to do aquarium salt baths to help it along.

Out of curiousity how long have you been doing the stress coat and water changes route? It can sometimes take a while for results to show- especially if yours is a crowntail.

The carbon and the other packet are separate. There's Fluval SPEC Biomax and a sac of carbon.

I've heard mixed opinions on salt bathes, but I'm definitely not opposed to trying them at this point.

It's been nearly two weeks now. He's also developed a bit of a white protrusion since yesterday now. It's hard to see on camera, but it's right by his gills and I worry it may be a fungal infection. He is the only thing in this tank, and there are no live plants or anything. It's a new tank with all new things in it.

In that case I would go ahead with the kanaplex. You can remove the carbon and just let it dry out or keep it in a cup. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to keep the bacteria in it alive or anything. After the treatment is done you can put it back in to help get it back out of the water.

I'm new to the fish world, but when I first got my fish I treated with kanaplex for fin rot on one fish, and a white thing on another fish..... both fish ended up getting better, but then dying a few months later from what looked like kidney failure. I am now much, much more cautious when using medications in the tank. What others say about keeping the water clean and using salt dips first is definitely what I would recommend now.... and if you do end up needing to use kanaplex because the disease has gone too far, only use it for the sick fish in quarantine and not the main tank.... (although in your case that obviously doesn't matter as he is the only fish right now). Unless he looks like he is about to die, I'd try the salt first...

I have now successfully treated many different illnesses with a salt dip in the morning and one in the afternoon. After just two days they looked much healthier.

I’m trying the kanaplex just because of the rate this has been progressing. Every single day he just looks so much worse.

The first is almost 48 hours after kanaplex. Second is from a few days ago. No difference so far. Still active and eating.

I was wondering how I should adjust water changes while dosing?
