I was wondering if anyone has any experience on treating fin rot. Can anyone please tell me if there are any cures that you use that are effective either medication or simple water change etc...

Interpet No 8 worked well for me. It also cures many other things aswell. You have to be carefull though and monitor your levels because it can disrupt your filter bacteria. I wouldnt recommend other interpet potions because they don't work all that well. No 8 seems to go against the grain though

Nah I couldnt find that interpet stuff so I tried melafix on my swordtail but it didnt work and she eventually died. Its lucky though that it can't be spread.

J-Man, I am currently treating my angelfish with Maracyn I and II. These 2 medicines are for many diseases, among them fin rot. I don't know how effective they are because I've just started. But from what I hear they're pretty good. If you get them, I hope they work for you.

J-Man, I've been using Maracyn I and II for 4 days now. My sick fish developed fungus on her dorsal and caudal fins. That fungus fell off her body only 2 days after using these medications (I use them simultaneously). And she looks so much better after using these medications. Maracyn I and II together treat multiple diseases including fin and tail rot. It's good to use both medications at once in case of secondary infections. Also, as you treat your fish with any medication, it's good to add to your tank 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water - it will relieve the stress on your fish. If you're not sure, ask Gunnie - she has recommended these Maracyns to me and they seem to be working very well so far.

One more thing, when you add medication(s) to your tank, it's better to remove carbon from your filter, otherwise it will absorb all the medications and render them ineffective. If you have a quarantine tank, please use it. The water will become cloudy with medications and without carbon - but that is normal. Only carefully monitor your ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels during medicating your fish. As I am using Maracyns, their treatment lasts 5 days. On the fifth day in my case, it's advisable to make a partial water change. So whatever the length of your treatment is, make a partial water change after the last treatment day. Some treatment cycles can be repeated, and so should be the water change. Just carefully read the label of your medications.

Excellent advice Aquagirl! I went to a pet store where some of the fish were being medicated, and the owner didn't have a filter in it, just a very good airstone with a strong pressure going through it. He said he just does water changes when he needs to, and adds the meds back in according to how much water he took out.

Thank you Aquagirl, but I must give all the credit to my friend Bryan. I don't get sick fish very often, and always ask him for help. His advice has always been right on the money.

No I don't think that's fin rot. Fin rot looks like white fungus stuff only appearing on the fins. That is just damged fins. You can use medication or could just wait and if food, water and compatibility are good they should heal up. Some of my fish have had rips in their tails and have healed but keep a close eye on the fishes behaviour etc..

I'm not sure Ive noticed it when fish get stressed out usually after being introduced to a new tank and/or when some fish have been giving them a hard time

Farout my swordtail has finrot again. They must be heaps succeptable to it. The cause are something like stress or dirty water. and my water is crystal clean and no-one goes after him continually, sometimes the male guppy tries to mate with him (idiot fish) but not constantly?????

Jessie lynn, sometimes those betta bowls are too small and they drag their tails over the decorations, gravel or what ever is in the bowl. this can cause small tears and injuries. If its fin rot I would think it would be kind ow white. Bettsa really need to be in at least 5 Gal of water. the water quality in a bowl can go bad in a matter of hours without you even realizing it. just my thoughts.

Speaking of bettas and "popular betta bowls"... in Petcetera in Vancouver they had about 80-100 bettas all in small 200 millilitre plastic cups on shelves with no heating or plants - they all looked very ill. Then they had heart shaped betta bowls to buy with the betta that couldn't have contained more than 250 ml's water in them either! I was so disgusted I had to leave the store and plan on writing a stinking letter about how they should care for their fish. Anyone seen anything like that??

Most stores do keep their Bettas in tiny ittle containers and its awful.

I am moving my Betta to a larger tank. I realized, thanks to all of your comments , that my betta didn't have tail rot it was just the gravel that was injuring his poor fins in such a small bowl. Thanks for the help!

Ive seen something very similar to that Miss Mouse, even keeping them in plastic bags pinned up on the counter and all the rest in tiny plastic tanks same size on shelves, no heating, filtration etc.

That is just SO mean! The places here keep them in tanks with guppies so they're not so restricted...

Hi, I'm looking for advice on how to treat what I am pretty sure is fin rot. I got two new long fin black skirt tetras a month ago that had ich and ragged tail fins. Needless to say I'm not going back to that store. So I did the heat treatment for ich for two weeks and they still had some spots so I decided to move them to a 10 gallon QT and treat with Kordon's Rid Ich. That seems to finally have gotten rid of the ich and I have been treating for 4 days past any sign of ich, 12 days total.

But now the fin rot has gotten worse. Both bst are missing a chunk out of the dorsal fins and the black part of the fins are graying at the ends. One tetra now has two white spots in the tail, but it doesn't look like ich, it's larger and kinda looks like two white blotches. That tetra also has black edging to the bottom of the tail fin. Sorry I can't get a picture, they are too fast and my camera isn't good enough to get any clear pics.

What should I treat them with? I have already been doing daily partial water changes of at least 50%, but the fin rot seems to be progressing since I've moved them to quarantine. I did do a fish in cycle with the bst in my main tank (28 gal), but I was doing daily water changes using Prime, and the ammonia and nitrites never got over .25ppm. They have already been through a heat treatment and a med treatment for ich, so I don't want to stress out my fish much more.

Also, how long does it take for ich to die out without a host? My MT cycled right before I moved the fish to QT (0, 0, 5), and I've been adding fish food to maintain my cycle. Tank temp is at 68 since I had to move my heater with the fish.

Thanks for reading, these are my first fish besides a betta in a bowl I had as a kid and I would really like to keep these guys alive!

Ok the white blotch could be a fungus from the fin rot. Buy some antI fungal medication at your nearest pet shop. What is the temperature of the QT tank? I have a link for treating fin rot in betta's that is really helpful. Although you have black skirt tetras, fin rot in betta's is the same as in black skirt tetras. As soon as they are healthy, get a school for them as tetras are a schooling fish. Good luck!

I have never purchased any medications other than aquarium salt so I'm not too knowledgeable here. I've heard Melafix is pretty good. I just looked at Petsmart website (I hate petsmart but whatever) and Melafix for bacterial infections (fin rot) and Pimafix for fungal infections (white blotch). They are both from the API brand and I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that they can be used together.

Fungal and bacterial infections can get aggravated in warmer waters. I'd suggest slowly decreasing their temp down to 76F - 78F and just continue providing them with really clean water. If ammonia, nitrites and nitrates aren't presenting problems for you, the fin rot should clear on it's own. Good clean water is the best cure for fin rot I know.

I didn't know that! I thought warmer water helped but thanks!,!

Nope. It helps ICH, but only between temps of 86F - 90F. Lower than that, and it only helps them to multiply.

I've been doing a little stocking, adding some Cory catfish, but I think I might have thrown my cycle off a bit. My betta is showing signs of fin rot. I've never treated it before, but I'm in the process of setting up a hospital tank. Do I move him into it and dose with salt?

Careful dosing salt it can damage their labyrinth organ. I would just try nice clean water. And something more like stress coat. What size tank?

He's in a 10 gallon with 4 corys and and 3 tetras. I only have a small half gallon qt and I've been debating moving him out into his own 5 gallon anyway, but now I'm worried about stressing him out. I just did about a 30 percent water change yesterday, and I haven't tested the water yet.

Whether water changes alone will help depends on how severe the rot is.
Can you post a picture?

I will try and snag a pic when I get back. I know that the top fin on his back side has a chunk about half an inch in missing. It's not too wide but it goes pretty long. I think he might have gotten nipped or snagged and since then it's progressively got deeper
