5 Gallon Tank How to switch from internal to sponge filter

nanoist

Hi everyone,

I have a 5.5 Aqua Culture starter tank for my betta. It’s been cycled and doing very well. However, I kinda don’t like the filter it came with. It’s a Micro Whisper filter. I was thinking of switching over to sponge filter. I like the bubbles and surface agitation they can provide. I find my surface water regularly gets filmy. I figured a little movement could help with that. How would I go about this? I don’t want to destroy my cycle by just up and taking out established media. Would I run both for a bit?

Yep since ýou can't really swap media over to a sponge filter, I'd just run them side by side for a few weeks. If the only stock is your betta, the bacteria colony is assumedly fairly small so shouldn't take too long.
