How To Stop Tail Biting

Okay so I have been battling my betta with a fin issue. At first I thought he just kept getting fin rot but now I know for a fact he's biting his own tail. One day he was fine, his fins were nice and long and he had so much new growth and the next day, his fins were bitten off A LOT! Like worse then he had them before. I will be doing water changes every other day to help him heal but is there anything I can do to get him to stop biting his own fins? I've heard of people putting a ping pong ball in the tank so they can push that around. His tank is pretty empty right now, just some black sand, a few rocks, a couple anubias nana, and some very small dwarf sag but other then that, not much for him to explore. Should I put more plants in his tank so he can explore them and not bite his fins? Anyone have any other advice for me?

I would definitely get more plants and things for him to explore and swim through. I've never tried the ping pong thing myself, but it's worth a shot.

Yea I'm going to have to get him some more plants to explore, maybe some hornwort, crypt wendtiI red and s. repens. I think I might have to upgrade his light to either a finnex planted plus or a stingray since the one he has is not the best for plant growth. I maybe do the ping pong ball thing for now until I get the funds for a new light and all the plants
