How To Silence A Noisy Filter

I've just upgraded my filter, same brand as the last but it's crazy loud. Anyone have any ideas on how to make it quiet? It's in my room so it'll make sleeping difficult. Would turning it off overnight be an okay solution?

Is that filter powered by an air pump?

No its via a power outlet. It can pump in some air with an air tube if I wish

I’m not sure how to help you but don’t turn your filter off. It will kill the good bacteria in the tank and ruin your cycle. The filter should always be running.

Ok, could there still be air in the media or did you swap it with the old filter ?

Its brand new so there could be. I'll have to open it up in the water and check. You think that could be causing it?

Often air causes filters to be noisy.
Even after cleaning they can be.

Think about swapping (some) media with the old one so this one doesn't need.to be cycled all over again.

I'd love too but I had to return the old one to the shop as I claimed under warranty. I just pulled it apart underwater and it didn't help. I think it's more loud when its connected to the wall as its pretty quiet when I hold it in mid water. But I tried putting some sponges between the filter and wall and it's not making a difference

I'm sorry for you alli, I brought a replacement 4 outlet automatic backup air pump from aquaholics online and it was noisier then the past one, I sent them an email and never got a reply, 12 months later and it was to noisy to watch tv and I threw it out.
maybe its the case you need another filter.

Does it quiet down if you apply pressure to the case (i.e. squeeze the plastic). Just trying to determine whether it's the housing or the internals causing the racket.

Hi!

Just a quick suggestion that sometimes works when my filter gets noisy (like a loud vibration) I take out the impeller and reinsert it and bingo-quiet!
The impeller works by wizzing round on a spindle and if the spindle goes off centre it causes a right noise.
It might be worth a try...

It doesn't seem too. It only quietens when 8 detach it from the wall.
