I have a dirted planted tank capped with sand and I want to make some changes but I am concerned about killing off a lot of the beneficial bacteria by removing the sand.
Most of your beneficial bacteria are in your filter media. Is this a Walstad setup without a filter?

What kind of filter do you have. That is where most of the bb live. I just changed my sand. I added some stability once I was done to give it a boost just in case.

You should be fine, just keep an eye on parameters. Keep that filter media running on a plastic container full of tank water!
