How to reach a compromise about a new tank?

This hobby is something that I really enjoy and I have the money to start another tank... I was thinking of taking down my 10gal freshwater and starting a big tank, like 65 or 75 gallons for a community tank. I found a good deal for a 75g bow front on Craigslist.

I wanted to set it up in my dad’s office, but when I asked him about it he said no, even though I would pay for it and take care of it. He said it was just too big and didn’t feel comfortable putting it on the second floor.

I want to keep being a saltwater and freshwater hobbyist when I take down the 10gal, but can’t seem to reach a compromise. I don’t think they know how much this means to me. Maybe instead I could ask for them to let me get a smaller tank like 20 gallons or 29 gallons.
I don’t know how to convince them on this and I am really excited about this idea but they aren’t so sure. Would offering to get a smaller tank like 20g help?

Try for a 40 breeder they have a great footprint and still smaller as to not take up a ton of room. And lighter than a 65/75...

Maybe ask what the biggest size is he would feel confortable with. Then maybe negotiate from there?

I asked about a smaller size but they said to discuss it later. A 40 breeder is what I have for saltwater and they already think that is a big tank.
Thankyou for your replies. I’m thinking a 29g is my best bet

To help stimulate ideas:
  • Are there other locations you could put a tank?
  • Would a tank in the office look out of place for the kind of business they do?
  • Could you volunteer/work part time at a pet store instead of getting a new tank?
  • Are there companies in your area which maintain professional tanks, and could you "partner" with them to keep a tank at the office, which would provide some assurance to your dad everything is set up well & kept clean?
  • Could you let your dad/the office people pick what goes into the tank to some degree, to help them feel involved?
I hope you can find a way to keep growing in the hobby! Try to see things from other people's views when negotiating, where cost/labor/space is a bigger factor than fascination with the creatures.

It's just my dad that works in the office, and I don't think he minds what's in it. He's a professor and will be having video calls with students, but it'll be at the other side of the room. I'll see about what other places I can put the tank, thanks!

I forgot to mention that we also have a spare 20g hex, but it has the footprint of pretty much a 10 gallon, just lots of vertical space. I'm thinking if I could maybe except that as my new tank my dad probably wouldn't have as much of a problem with it.

So I asked them about it and they said the highest size they’d be comfortable with is 40 gallon breeder but we don’t want to get into starting a new tank now with the start of school and change of rooms (he’s moving his office to my old bedroom and I still have to paint my new room).
I’m going out to get paint samples today and hopefully full gallons if I like the colors.
Thanks for the help everyone. After this whole room change is done I think I’ll have a better chance if I figure out where the tank could go (measure it) and find a place for the rest of my dads books
Thank you all for your help
