fill a bucket with tank water.
turn off your filter & open it
gently rinse/squeeze your media in the bucket of tank water
put media back & re-set up your filter as per it's instructions.
turn it back on

voila!

Next water change capture a bucket full and swish the biomedia around in the discard tank water then gently squeeze the sponge a few times. If the water gets gross and black from the sponge empty the bucket add a bit more tank water and squeeze a bit more until it's not making the water totally gross.
