How-to: pond filtration???

xsalomexx

Ive tried very hard to find videos explaining it and i cant quite seem to find very clean information on how exactly it works or how to make it work. Anyone care to please share some knowledge and explain? maybe paste a link to a good youtube video?

Pond filters work the same way as most aquarium filters. A pump of some sort forces water through or across media and back into the water.

This is one of the sites I used to get ideas.
Bog Gravel Filtration: Water Cleaned by Mother Nature - POND Trade Magazine

I’m on my second revision of a bog filter now.

The basic idea is for the water to enter a vessel, be slowed down, and pass through a filtering media. In my case I use lava rock. It’s cheap, porous etc… The media catches the debris drawn in by the pump and releases overflow water back into the pond. I plant directly into the lava rocks. Bullrush grows like crazy so I use that. It’s basically s wetland to filter out your pond.
Initial plan to force debris down.

Revision, primarily for better acoustics. Pipe was filled with river stones

Planted. It took 1 year before the roots were pushing rocks out.

Annual maintenance is basically removing some plants (growth) and rinsing the substrate.
