Hello went to petsmart yesterday and bought a java fern. When I got home I wrapped some thread around the stem 3 time's and tied that to a small rock to weight it down. My question is will I have to cut the thread wrapped around it off or will it be ok left in place once it attaches to the rock.. thank you

When planting Java Fern, I just poked the ryizome into a gap in driftwood or between two rocks. Lol.
Once the roots take hold, be a good idea to cut loose the string. Good luck.

I always just plant the black things into the substrate and make sure the rhizome (the thing the black things and leaves connect to) is above and it does fine; the black things aren't really roots but some people call them roots. The key thing is to make sure the rhizome isn't planted.

A more direct answer to your question - is yes if you use thread you should cut it after a month or so - the rhizome will get larger (and longer) over time and if you tied it too tightly it can cause problems when the rhizome grow into it.

Thank you for the reply. Have never had plants before and read they are supposed to be good for beginners. I also planted some java moss. Hope it all works out. Did have some snails sneak in with the moss, thought I picked through it pretty good but apparently not, hope it doesn't turn into a infestation lol

Super glue to a small stone or driftwood

Since the rhizome naturally plants itself I would gently place it in the tank and let it settle by itself
