How to place media on a fluval 306

I'm getting my friends 60 gallon tank and his fluval 306. I was wondering what sort of media I needed to buy for it and what order to place it in. I lso would like to know where in the filter I would place some seachem purigen.

I personally do this in order of top to bottom.

Ceramic rings
Purigen/Carbon
Sponge for mechanical filtration.

 

Do you also have the sponges on the side part of the canister? And by sponges on the bottom do you mean the black sponges?

The sponge that fills up one side of the canister is actually like a pre-filter. For my Fluval 406,
Then on the other side, from bottom to top would be:

Black biofoam sponge
bio balls
ceramic rings/biomax
carbon

I would switch the ceramic rings and carbon.
